Jefferson County is a county located in the state of Kentucky.
Jefferson County was organized in 1780 and one of the first three counties formed out of the original Kentucky County, which was still part of Virginia at the time (the other two being Fayette and Lincoln).
In the county the population is spread out with 24.30% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 30.40% from 25 to 44, 22.80% from 45 to 64, and 13.50% who are 65 years of age or older.

The county's population in 1780 was concentrated almost exclusively around the Falls of the Ohio and nearby streams that emptied into the Ohio River, notably the Middle and South forks of,Beargrass Creek and Goose Creek east of Louisville.
Jefferson County, from its exposed position on the river, was particularly vulnerable to Indian raids even some years after the interior of the state was relatively safe.
Jefferson County, which in the nineteenth century was one of Kentucky's leading agricultural counties, has become in the twentieth century its most highly urbanized.

Louisville, the county seat of Jefferson County, is said to owe its existence to the Falls of the Ohio, which interrupt the navigation of the Ohio River at that point.

Jefferson County, Kentucky, is in north-central Kentucky, on the western side of the Cincinnati Arch, an anticlinal geologic structure that extends from Indiana and Ohio through Kentucky and Tennessee.
The eastern two-thirds of the county is in the Bluegrass area of central Kentucky, comprising Ordovician and Devonian limestones, dolomites and shales, with the limestone predominating.
The western half of the extreme southern area of the county is in the Knobs, a geological escarpment representing the transition from the higher and younger Pennyrile to the west and south, to the lower and older Bluegrass to the east.

 Alternatives to Incarceration in Jefferson County, Kentucky
During the fall of 1986, jail crowding in Jefferson County, Kentucky came to the forefront of public concern.
The home incarceration program, CHAMPS (County Home Arrest Monitoring Program) was operated by U.S. Corrections Corporation; the work-release center was established through a contract with Dismas House of Kentucky, Inc., a non-profit corporation; and the intensive supervision program, MIP (Misdemeanant Intensive Probation) was operated through contractual arrangements with the State Division of Probation and Parole.
This assessment of the jail alternatives implemented in Jefferson County, Kentucky as a response to jail crowding indicates that these programs resulted in continued public safety, reduced jail day commitments, and in a reduction of costs to the community.

Cancer incidence rates for Jefferson County during the year 1991 were compared with the 1991 Kentucky and 1989 National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) age-adjusted incidence rates for all types of cancers combined and specific cancers of concern to the community including lung, breast, colorectal, prostate, and invasive cervical cancer.
The Jefferson County Board of Health study indicated that the incidence of cancer for the five planning areas of Jefferson County did not differ from each other, and the rates for Jefferson County were not different when compared to rates for the state of Kentucky.
Residents of the West County planning area were found more likely to be diagnosed with cancer later and develop the types of cancers often diagnosed in the later stages of the disease (colon and lung) and have a high death rate.

In October, 1835, he mustered nineteen militiamen from Jefferson Municipality (which had the exact geographic confines of present-day Orange County), who marched to the defense of Bexar, and participated in the "Grass Fight" and the Battle of San Antonio with Col. Ben Milam.
David Garner was elected sheriff of Jefferson County on three occasions, in 1839 (resigned), 1843, and 1845, and served two years, 1839-1840, as Jefferson County's representative in the Texas Congress.
11 In 1846, Jacob Garner ran for and was elected district clerk of Jefferson County, and since the principal task of that office was to record the minutes of the quarterly assizes of the district court, he must have considered himself sufficiently qualified to discharge those duties.

Three of the top 10 hazardous waste generators in Kentucky are located in Rubbertown (State of Kentucky, 1996), and 74 percent (%) of all hazardous substance spills in Jefferson County in 1996 occurred in the Rubbertown area (EPA, 1996).
