Public broadcasting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Public broadcasting (also known as public service broadcasting or PSB) is the dominant form of broadcasting around the world, where radio, television, and potentially other electronic media outlets receive funding from the public.
Public broadcasting sometimes serves simply to put voices or languages on the air that may otherwise be completely ignored, and sometimes due to a lack of voice, obliterated.
Public music stations are probably best known for playing classical music, although other formats have been used, including the emerging "eclectic" music format that is rather freeform in nature (common among college radio stations, though a well-known eclectic NPR affiliate is KCRW in California).

 Public broadcasting
Public broadcasting is state-subsidised or directly viewer-supported broadcasting of radio, television, or in theory other electronic media.
In theory, public broadcasting is not beholden to advertisers, political parties, or the government of the day -- and some critics say, it is also not particularly responsive to its viewers.
While commercial broadcasters often use the word as if it were a category one could observe directly, public broadcasters are forced by their very mandate to justify their use of the word - the BBC at one point claimed it would label no one a "terrorist" as they considered it a political term.

JPR buys radio station near Eureka - September 29, 2004
Jefferson Public Radio has expanded its 20-station broadcast empire by acquiring tiny KZPN in Bayside, Calif., near Eureka, the station that won listeners with an unauthorized re-broadcast of BBC shows.
The station adds to JPR’s rich panoply of 20 stations and 32 translators dotting the map from Roseburg to Redding and from Lakeview to the coast — all built up starting in 1969 from the first station at Southern Oregon University, still the owner of the network.
It is geographically the largest public radio network in the nation.

Perhaps the more upsetting issue for many of us is that JPR is a non-locally based, very large public radio network, and we have no reason to believe it will be at all responsive to the needs of this community.
The public hearing deadline for this purchase may have already passed (although none of us ever saw the required public notice in our local papers), but there are indications that it can still be stopped, or at least delayed.
JPR’s "Rhythm and News" will duplicate at least five hours a day of existing NPR programming, and much of it at exactly the same time that it is already available locally.

 AJR - Public Radio Paradise
JPR claims as its territory the 60,000 square-mile area of southern Oregon and far-northern California that once tried to secede from the U.S. and still calls itself, only partly in jest, the state of Jefferson.
A JPR translator in Grants Pass, Oregon, was knocked off the air in just that way, angering many in that community and leading Kramer to preempt similar moves by starting to convert many of the JPR translators to regular stations.
JPR, by contrast, frequently reminds its listeners that it is dedicated to "stimulating the thoughtful exchange of information and ideas among the people of our region since 1969." As the radio network grew in the 1970s and '80s, its coverage area began to match the region known historically as the state of Jefferson.
