Arriving in Paris in 1784 as the new American government's ambassador to France, the 41-year-old Jefferson eases gracefully into Parisian society, charming his hosts with his lilting Southern accent and his tall tales about the "red man" and the natural wonders of his homeland.
In fact, about all Jefferson does in Paris is party—that and plant a garden of American corn and sweet potatoes on the grounds of his chateau.
Jefferson's revolution is incomplete because it doesn't address the issue of slavery—he responds with mush-mouthed embarrassment, as if the idea had never occurred to him.

As beautifully staged as all Merchant-Ivory films, "Jefferson in Paris" is nevertheless a disaster, intellectually infuriating and thoughtlessly racist.
Poor Sally's problematical existence is presumably the excuse for the story, which is told by her freed son (James Earl Jones, whose famous diction makes his "slave grammar" ridiculous).
The resonance of Sally's being half-sister to Jefferson's sainted dead wife is unexplored.

"Jefferson in Paris" is the latest effort from the Oscar-winning team of producer Ismael Merchant, director James Ivory and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala ("Howards End," "The Remains of the Day").
Since the film opens with the charge that Jefferson had children by his slave Sally Hemings (Thandie Newton) and then unfolds in flashback, it would be logical to assume this is what the movie is about.
It seems Jefferson promised his wife on her deathbed he would never remarry, which compromises his desire to woo Maria.

The Journalist is told by Madison Hemings, (James Earl Jones) that he is the son of Jefferson and former slave Sally Hemings, and that the President promised their mother that upon their 21st birthday, he and his siblings would be declared free, thus gaining freedom years in advance of the Emancipation Proclamation.
In this film, Jefferson is portrayed as a stoic man, so out of touch with his emotions, that he is unable to sustain a mature relationship with any of the characters in the film.
Far and away, the most interesting features of this film are Jefferson's observations on the the class struggles and the burgeoning French Revolution, and it's somewhat vague similarity to the struggle of the American slaves to achieve a legacy of freedom, along with it's speculation on Jefferson's racially mixed descendants.

With "Jefferson in Paris," the team has abandoned the terrain vividly delineated by some of England's best writers to venture into the unknowable: the emotional interior of an historic giant.
Ismail Merchant, James Ivory, and Ruth Prawer Jhabvala have succeeded in doing the impossible: they have made Thomas Jefferson a boring man. Their bland creation spends his Paris years arranging the women in his life to suit his needs, and he has a devil of a time keeping them from tripping over each other.
While the relationship between Jefferson and Sally Hemmings, master and slave, is an enduring puzzle, Merchant Ivory has bestowed the air of truth on something that is essentially historical gossip.
