Jeffrey Shears Ashby (born June 1954) is an American astronaut and a veteran of three space shuttle missions.
As a test pilot in the United States Navy, Ashby helped develop the FA-18 aircraft and flew the FA-18 in combat missions as part of Operation Desert Storm and Operation Southern Watch during and after the Gulf War and as part of Operation Continue Hope in Somalia.
Ashby was selected as an astronaut candidate in 1994; he piloted space shuttle mission STS-93 in 1999 and commanded missions STS-100 in 2001 and STS-112, both assembly missions for the International Space Station.

Collins was the pilot on the STS-63 mission in February, 1995 and the STS-84 mission in May, 1997.
Ashby will be responsible for key shuttle systems during launch and landing, will lead any in-flight maintenance work which may be required and would serve as overall coordinator for any unplanned spacewalk which might be required.
