Jeffrey Donaldson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jeffrey Mark Donaldson (born 7 December 1962) is a Northern Irish politician and Member of Parliament for Lagan Valley.
Jeffrey Donaldson was born in Kilkeel, County Down and joined the Ulster Unionist Party and served as agent for Enoch Powell, MP.
Donaldson became the leading anti-agreement figure in the Ulster Unionists and led several challenges to the party leader, David Trimble, all of which failed.

Jeffrey’s coyness and reluctance to make any reference to educational attainments are in stark contrast to his claim in a sympathetic TV profile a few years ago that he had “turned down an opportunity to study history at Cambridge,” a claim which infers spectacular early education attainment.
Apparently little Jeffrey left his local school in Kilkeel with fewer GCEs than Rodney Trotter; a fairly unremarkable achievement that would in later life be a constant irritant to his self esteem, especially in the company of the donnish Trimble and his coterie of university trained ministers.
Jeffrey Donaldson is a shrewd, clever operator and nobody’s fool; he has not fallen into the same trap of another famous Jeffrey (Archer) and invented a glowing C.V. flagrantly using it to climb the ladder to political power.

Donaldson for long was considered to be a prime figure on the liberal wing of the UUP and was widely viewed as such in the U.S. before his strange transformation.
Indeed, Donaldson was regularly put forward by the British government in America as the accommodating face of Ulster unionism and was a frequent visitor to these shores on that type of mission.
Donaldson’s final hope was to emerge from the recent election holding the balance of power in Ulster unionism, but he was unable even to achieve that.

Donaldson, a protege of former UUP leader Lord Molyneaux and former constituency agent for Enoch Powell when he was the MP for South Down, said he had long argued for a strong unionist movement.
Jeffrey¹s not perfect we know, but Jeffrey is a principled man and he stood on policies that I agree with, that reflect unionist opinion.

Samuel's brother Alex was one of nine police officers killed in a mortar bomb attack on Newry RUC Station in 1985.
By then, Mr Donaldson was already an aspiring politician - in 1983 he became agent to the MP for South Down, Enoch Powell - and two years later he was the youngest member elected to the Stormont Assembly.
Mr Donaldson would soon be on a collision course with new party leader David Trimble, which is still having dramatic ramifications for the party.

The commonplace view of the Paisleyite triumph in the Assembly elections in the North of Ireland, a triumph completed by the transfer of Unionist dissident Jeffrey Donaldson and two supporting assembly members, is that we are seeing a resurgent Unionism moving to the right and uniting behind Paisley, leaving Trimble defeated.
Donaldson and the DUP represent a petty-bourgeois in revolt, waving their fists at the unionist bourgeoisie, unable to live with the possibility that Catholics would be in government no matter what humiliating conditions are forced on the republicans.
In any case, it looks like we are in for a long period of direct rule and further political stalemate, if for no other reason than the fact that, contrary to her claims, Britain is staying in Ireland, is guaranteeing partition and will continue to search for a sectarian and colonial stability.

 Defection — Donaldson Goes
Donaldson will now jostle for the leadership of his new colleagues, for his ambition will not disappear, or fall, as one might say in an aside to Peter (pun intended).
This sort of 'pie in the sky' wishful thinking scenario is clearly impossible anyway (if it ever was on) now with Donaldson in the camp (and Paisley breathing fire) to which the bold Jeffrey had defected because he couldn't agree with Trimble doing such a deal.
Now that Donaldson is no longer a thorn inside the party, Trimble should seize the moment (forgetting his earlier fumble), press for the alternative method of election to the two major posts and stand for the First Minister's position once again, thereby persuading Sinn Féin to encourage a suitable response from the IRA.

Donaldson might be tempted in this direction, since he was part of the UUP team that negotiated the original agreement in 1998.
What prompted Donaldson's walkout on that occasion was his view that there was no mechanism within the agreement to pressure republicans to begin decommissioning their weapons.
Whether the presence of Donaldson and company would change the dynamics of the DUP and strengthen the so-called pragmatic wing of the party remains to be seen.
