Lynch argues that the highlighted final clause requiring "indictment" refers to his prior convictions and not to the instant offense.

 Lynch, David (1946—) Biography | sjpc_03_package.xml
This coming-of-age story of the naive but endlessly curious Jeffrey Beaumont (Lynch mainstay Kyle MacLachlan) chronicles the protagonist's nightmarish descent into the underworld of the fictional town of Lumberton, which is run by villain Frank Booth (the menacing Dennis Hopper in a role which resuscitated his career).
Lynch's style became his signature, to the point where reviewers, unable to comprehend the assortment of bizarre characters and dialogue of either Wild at Heart (1990) or Lost Highway (1996), simply claimed that Lynch was being Lynch.
Lynch worked at an assortment of odd jobs (including one at a picture framing shop where he was fired for not being able to get up in the morning) to pay for his eventual enrollment at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia in 1965.

Jeffrey is an innocent youth who is both horrified by the violence inflicted by Frank, but also tempted by it as the means of possessing Dorothy for himself.
Lynch's purpose was not to clear up narrative threads but to reveal the true nature of the themes of domestic violence and child sexual abuse that had taken a back seat in the second series of the television show.
Lynch's films are tragedies about the overwhelming tendency for people to condemn themselves to a world of darkness and confusion, by succumbing to violence and the desire to control others.

 Powell v. Schriver
Devilla maintains that as a result of Lynch's comment, word about her sex-change operation and her HIV-positive status became known throughout the prison and that she thereafter became the target of harassment by guards and prisoners.
During the course of the trial, the court dismissed Crowley and Coughlin, as well as several of Devilla's causes of action, including--on the ground of qualified immunity--Devilla's claim that the defendants had violated her Eighth Amendment right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment.
It cannot be said that at the time of Lynch's disclosure, Devilla's right to maintain the confidentiality of her HIV-positive status and transsexualism was clearly established.

David Lynch - Blue Velvet - Post-modernism and Authorship
Lynch describes Blue Velvet as a story about a guy "who lives in two worlds at the same time, one of which is pleasant, the other terrifying".
The robin in Jeffrey's garden is mechanical, we are reminded it is a film we are watching, the whole piece is a simulacrum of reality, it is hyper-real in Baudrillard's sense of the word, but for Jeffrey it is the only reality, he is a fictional character.
Jeffrey's problem with reality stems from the fact that his reality is hyper-real, more 'reel' than 'real', hence the film's stylistics are deeply rooted in film tradition.

Lynch was contractually obliged to deliver a two-hour film, and the DVD features a montage of scenes deleted from his four-hour rough cut--reconstructed from production stills, since the actual footage is missing.
Jeffrey's temptations come to a boil once he, after assuming the roles of first her protector, then her saner lover, beats Dorothy during intercourse, becoming a version of Frank in the process.
Jeffrey is swiftly redeemed in the film's centerpiece, for my money the most transporting sequence ever committed to celluloid: kidnapped by Frank and his goons, he is brought to a drug den and subjected to a lip-synched performance of Roy Orbison's heartbreaking "In Dreams" by suave transvestite Ben (an enchanted Dean Stockwell).

David Lynch uses this storyline as the hook on which to hang his dark statements about the nature of sexual awakening, moral choice, and the deadly evil to which we strive to remain oblivious but which nonetheless lurks very close to the surface of otherwise ordinary lives.
Lynch fills out the world of Blue Velvet so lovingly, and with such care and imagination, and attention to detail (and to the odd, essential quirks of life), that, surreal as it is, this world seems wholly authentic to us.
