Shaara was also encouraged to write the book by film producer Ronald Maxwell, a family friend who based his film Gettysburg (1995) on The Killer Angels.
In contrast, Shaara begins the novel with a tired Robert Lee; his professional career is at a standstill, his wife feels abandoned, and his children have all grown up without him.
The third difficulty Shaara faces in writing this novel is his effort to explain a historical sequence of events without bogging the narrative down into a chain of global generalizations about the events of the war.

Shaara explained that he was aiming to produce an epic military study modeled after William Shakespeare's Henry V.
Shaara's son Jeffrey Shaara expanded the story by adding a prequel, Gods and Generals and a sequel, The Last Full Measure.
Second, since Shaara used the memoirs of General James Longstreet as a prime source for his history, the book has renewed the modern re-evaluation of Longstreet's reputation, damaged since the 1870s by the Lost Cause writers, such as Jubal A. Early.

A native of New Jersey, Michael Shaara grew to be an adventurous young man: over the years, he found work as a sailor, a paratrooper, a policeman, and an English professor at Florida State University.
Maxwell encouraged Shaara to continue the story his father began; inspired, Jeff planned an ambitious trilogy, with The Killer Angels as the centerpiece, following the war from its origins to its end.
Jeff Shaara was born in 1952 in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Shaara's storytelling is occasionally mechanical—he has yet to rise to the Pulitzer Prize–winning level of his father, Michael Shaara (The Killer Angels, etc.)—but his descriptions of individual combat in the air and the mass slaughter on the ground are stark, vivid and gripping.
Shaara could possibly cover the first world war with the same technical detail as he does the war between the states, hesitate no longer.
Shaara doesn't even begin dealing with the trench warfare of the war until the 1918's, when the Americans arrive, focusing, as I noted before, primarily on the air war that occurred in the first years of the war.

This time around, Shaara's son Jeffrey is responsible for the film and its far more interesting backstory.
When Michael Shaara died in 1988, Maxwell approached Jeffrey, the executor of his father's estate, to find a novelist who would write a prequel and a sequel to The Killer Angels that could eventually be adapted for the screen.
Both "movies" are indeed miniseries--not only for their behemoth running times but also for their barreling ignorance of cinematic nuances and their stupendous surfeit of schmaltz, dramaturgical pabulum, tiresome intellectual decorum and other dramatic compromises formatted to fit your television screen.

Book Summary : Gone for Soldiers (Random House Large Print) by JEFFREY SHAARA
The war at large and the exploits of many of it's primary figures, including General Zachary Taylor and his major role in the conflict, are virtually ignored.
However, when viewed as a prequel to Jeff Shaara's "Gods and Generals" and "The Last Full Measure", as well as his father's "The Killer Angels", this book is a worthy addition to the narrative thread the two men have woven.
Shaara, like his father, breathes life into the sometimes one-dimensional figures of history by using the historical fiction genre to give voice to their unrecorded musings and conversations.

As with all Shaara novels, it is so well researched and presented, and so historically accurate, it is really a shame to have to classify this work as historical fiction.

In March 1847, 8,000 soldiers landed on the beaches of Vera Cruz, led by the army's commanding general, Winfield Scott-a heroic veteran of the War of 1812, short tempered, vain, and nostalgic for the glories of his youth.
At his right hand is Robert E. Lee, a forty year-old engineer, a dignified, serious man who has never seen combat.
In vivid prose that illuminates the dark psychology of soldiers trapped behind enemy lines, Jeff Shaara brings to life the familiar characters, the stunning triumphs and soul-crushing defeats of this fascinating, long-forgotten war.

At the Movies by David Robinson Gods and Generals
Even those who, like me, read and enjoyed the Jeffrey Shaara prequel to his father Michael's more celebrated (and better) The Killer Angels (source of the movie Gettysburg) will wish this one shorter by about one hour of its four-hours' length.
Rather than developing the major characters - as the Shaara novels are at pains to go - director Maxwell spends way too much time on the lengthy battle scenes and devotes unnecessary footage to establishing the nobility of the South and its way of life.
Gods and Generals tries, with middling success, to capture Shaara's central theme: both North and (perhaps even more so) South felt that God was on their side, though both sides puzzled over God's mysterious ways.
