Wright's juvenile humor and freewheeling everything-but-the-kitchen-sink aesthetic are delicious together - he makes me think of Richard Prince, Mike Kelley and Jim Shaw rolled into one - but his filmic display style could be even more compressed and expanded than it is now.

Critics and audiences might think that Wright, playing Dominican drugs baron Peoples Hernandez, steals the new Shaft film from under Samuel L Jackson's nose.
Controversially, nothing was changed about the part, so Wright plays it with slicked-down hair, white clothes and an extravagant 'Spanglish' diction.
Then again, Wright's gleeful nastiness fits in the tradition of other distinguished Shakespeareans-turned-sniggering villains, established by the likes of Alan Rickman.

Although thirty-three-year-old Jeffrey Wright has played starring roles before, most notably as the painter Jean-Michel Basquiat in Basquiat (1996) and in Angels in America on Broadway, he's not an actor who apparently clamors for the audience's attention, but one who establishes himself each time as a quiet yet forceful personality.
A relative latecomer to acting, Wright studied political science at Amherst College and only ventured onstage after taking a summer acting course.
But both kinds of training - artistic and academic - served him well when he took on the role of Daniel Holt, a freed slave who fights alongside the Confederate raider (played by Simon Baker) who once owned him in Ang Lee's powerful new Civil War drama, Ride With the Devil.
