Jega: Geometry: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Unsurprisingly, Jega sounds not unlike his better-known classmates.
The record opens with a vast humming sound, as if Nathan were demonstrating how big a space he's working in by recording a huge wind rushing through it.
If the last Jega album, as some pundits remarked, invented drill-n-bass, this is "chill-n-bass." This isn't the chamber-music transcendence of Aphex Twin's slower moments; it's a gorgeous absense of feeling.

Mancunian Dylan Nathan [+] is one of a new generation of artists to begin producing electronic music inspired by U.K. artists such as Orbital [+] and Aphex Twin [+], but without having much interest in or contact with the UK acid house explosion from which those artists originally issued.
Recording under the name Jega [+] for a growing number of labels, Nathan's well-composed hybrids of new wave, electro, ambient, and, more recently, drum'n'bass are widely lauded in the international experimental electronic underground; his releases for noted Manchester-based, Autechre [+]-affiliated label Skam are among the label's best.
The results of that initial push were released by Skam in 1996 as the Jega EP [+], which was followed in mid-1997 by an additional self-titled 12-inch (sometimes referred to as the "Card Hore" EP).

 JEGA - Geometry
And that’s where Jega is at his best: putting together delicate constructions, coming back to the woodwork time and time again to strengthen them.
Jega seems to loose focus on a couple of occasions, but produces a generally good, if not unforgettable, album.
The man is definitely talented, and once he has realised that even Aphex Twin has slightly walked away from the “drum kit falling down the staircase” syndrome lately, and concentrate more on the core musical issues, he will be joining his pals in the big players’ league.

Jega, has learned from all that has gone before him, creating music largely free of cliché.
Jega is a multilimbed, multitalented, bowled-over brainiac with a future.
Although Jega is obviously influenced quite heavily by his friend Mike Paradinas (mu-Ziq), he charts out a path that is more melodic and wide-ranging.

Manchester, England’s Jega returns with a confident, striking second album that moves from fidgety electro beatitudes to moody atmospheric introspection.
With increased mastery of his equipment, and perhaps less of a need to assert so many ideas at once, ‘Geometry’ is a much deeper, more thematic record than his 1998 debut Spectrum.
Yeah, Jega flew over to perform at the Winter Music Conference last month only to have his performance short circuited before it even began by a testy sound system and an even testier club manager who had yours truly thrown out of the nightclub, virtually unprovoked.

Cinematic in scope and Commodore-based gaming in sound, Jega has produced an outstanding album that seems to deny the presence of human hands in its creation.
Going as far as to substitute underscores for spaces (a common programming trick allowing the use of multiple words in variable names), Jega places himself firmly in the computational metaphor that his music establishes.
Jega has managed to grasp the popular clamor and feeling of the recent, computerized past and from it extrapolate a convincing sound for the future.

In my review of Jega's first CD, Spectrum, I said (and I quote), "This is one of the weirdest techno albums I've ever heard." What I meant was that Spectrum was, fundamentally, schizophrenic--jumping all over the place, going from wild noodles to slow, melodious melodies almost at will.
Well, Jega's second release, Geometry, isn't quite that weird, but it's got plenty of variety.
There are trace elements of what I've come to call the "Morr" sound, what I've come to call the "Autechre" sound, and what I will henceforth call the "weird ass oscillation" sound.

Certainly, Jega's sound is colder than µ-ziq's, but no less hypnotic.
Nathan utilizes everything from hard- assed hip-hop beats to video game sound effects to sequenced modem line noise, and his sound is distinctly electronic-- there's rarely an element of humanity on the record, and when there is, it's tweaked and toyed with until it seems strangely computer- generated.
Often, there's at least a brief moment, if not an entire track, where Jega loses you in the rhythm before veering off in a totally whacked direction.

That criticism aside, Geometry is a unique and engaging album that should help Jega attain the recognition he so richly deserves.

For those of you unfamiliar with Phonok, this is a shockingly crunchy, bright and tweaked macro-electro assault that squeezes itself into acid repetition that doesn’t sound too dissimilar to Boards of Canada’s ace remix for Meat Beat Manifesto’s ‘Prime Audio Soup’.
Jega’s up next with a glitch-fest that sounds like Aphex’s Windowlicker if it was stripped off the R+B undercurrents and instead focused on it’s aquatic DSP’d spliced-up nature.

The songs on Jega's (Dylan Nathan's) Geometry evoke cavernous voids and in contrast, tightly compacted rhythms, filled with hollow beats.
Standard electronica pulses compete with those fading in and out, making a clatter with their irregularity.
