I first became familiar with the sound of the jegog from listening to the Akira soundtrack, a japanese anime movie whose score, by the amateur music group Geinoh Yamashirogumi, made terrific use of this wonderful instrument.
I borrowed this CD from the library several years ago but have never been able to find a copy elswhere...
I'd recommend playing this very loudly, on a high wattage system with subs, this is music in a distilled, primal, yet highly evolved form, it is meant to be felt with the whole body and not just heard.

I have come across tales of the gamelan jegog, built from giant bamboo trees that grow only in the west of Bali, and of the gamelan gong bheri, played by bowler-hatted musicians on gongs saved from a shipwreck, but such few recordings as there are of these styles are impossible to find.
The Japanese HQ was in Negara, and the Balinese took a fancy the their military music.

Gamelan Jegog is the closest thing to "pop" gamelan -- a modern gamelan variant partial to xylophone-type keyed instruments made of bamboo, some of which are quite massive.
The Jegog style began in west Bali, where bamboo is plentiful, making the bamboo gamelan the Balinese equivalent of a harmonica or comb-and-tissue-paper.
They seem to embody weather-related concepts particularly well, especially in the bass register -- the up-down-up-down rhythm is as visceral as the air before a thunderstorm.
