Jehuda Reinharz was born in Haifa, Israel, in 1944.
Reinharz is the recipient of honorary doctorates from Hebrew Union College, the Jewish Theological Seminary, Fairfield University in Connecticut and Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel.
Reinharz is married to Shulamit Reinharz, the Jacob S. Potofsky Professor of Sociology, director of the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute and director of the Women's Studies Research Center at Brandeis.

In an interview with Jewish News, Reinharz said the university, known worldwide as a leader in scientific as well as Jewish studies, has always placed a high value on inclusion, which he believes is the institution's secret of success as it prepares to turn 50 later this year.
Reinharz notes that Brandeis is able to fulfill its many responsibilities to the academic as well as Jewish communities by making inclusion a priority in all of its programs.
Reinharz's passion is Jewish history, and he believes the work being done now by students, as well as the role Brandeis is playing as a think tank for the Jewish community, will help shape the future of the Jewish people.

Jehuda Reinharz, president of the only nonsectarian Jewish-sponsored university in the United States, told The Jewish Week that Kushner, a Pulitzer Prize winner, was chosen “strictly on the basis of his accomplishments as a playwright” and that political views have never been explored by the university committee considering people for honorary degrees.
Reinharz said that the Brandeis honorary degree committee and board did not know about Kushner’s Mideast views when he was chosen a year ago to receive a degree at the May 21 graduation.
Reinharz said he hopes to expand the program to Europe, though he admits it will be difficult to find universities there open to the concept, given the negative attitudes there toward Israel.

For Reinharz to mess around with such basic theological concepts in the name of “dialogue” and to suggest that long rejected biblical figures ought now to be included among the exemplars of the continuity of Jewish tradition is at the very least an expression of pathetic identity confusion, if not downright ignorance.

President Jehuda Reinharz recently signed an anti-intimidation pledge, joining the ranks of more than 300 university presidents who have condemned recent attacks on Jewish and Zionist students.
The pledge, authored by former Dartmouth President James Freedman and former Cornell President Frank Rhodes, is a response to clashes between pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian protesters at the University of California, Berkeley, San Francisco State University, and Concordia University in Montreal.
