Dialect and accent significantly influence automatic speech recognition performance, and therefore it is critical to detect and classify non-native speech.
In this study, we consider three areas that include: (i) prosodic structure (normalized f0, syllable rate, and sentence duration), (ii) phoneme acoustic space modeling and sub-word classification, and (iii) word-level based modeling using large vocabulary data.
The results show that significant changes occur at the prosodic, phoneme space, and word levels for dialect analysis, and that effective dialect classification can be achieved using processing strategies from each domain.

The Gangwon dialect has become the favorite slang of comedians, who often use it on TV shows these days, and is contributing greatly to raising the popularity of soap operas which have its main characters use it.
As the popularity of the Gangwon dialect has risen, local broadcasters in the Gangwon Province have begun making programs solely in their local dialect, which until recently was considered unacceptable on television.
The recent Gangwon dialect boom is noteworthy in that it draws no distinctions between the mainstream and the non-mainstream, unlike in the past, when those using provincial dialects were considered inferior to those who used standard language.

The eight provinces' boundaries remained unchanged for almost five centuries from 1413 to 1895, and formed a geographic paradigm that is still reflected today in the Korean Peninsula's administrative divisions, dialects, and regional distinctions.
The new system of districts did not last long, however, as one year later, on August 4, 1896 (the 33rd year of King Gojong), the former eight provinces were restored, with five of them (Chungcheong, Gyeongsang, Jeolla, Hamgyŏng, and P'yŏngan), being divided into north and south halves, to form a total of 13 provinces.
The distinctive Jeju Dialect is used on Jeju Island, which became a separate province in 1946.

To call other languages as "dialects" is erroneous as Mandarin is no more a dialect of the North than say, Cantonese is a dialect of most of Guangdong province.
Spoken dialects of Chinese are not entire languages unto themselves; they differ mostly in pronunciation.
Were they a single language, they one should consider all the West Germanic languages just "dialects" of one language, and likewise for all the Romance languages besides the South and East Romance languages should be considered just one "language" as well, for example.
