Jelling is a town located in Jelling municipality near Vejle, Denmark on the Jutland peninsula.
The locality is particularly noteworthy for being the site of the burial mound of King Gorm of Denmark and his wife Thyra, the parents of King Harold I of Denmark (Harold Bluetooth, Danish: Harald Blåtand), who erected a Christian church on the spot.
Harold also erected the Jelling stones – massive monolithic rune stones – bearing the words: "Harold, king, bade these memorials to be made after Gorm, his father, and Thyra, his mother.

The Jelling stones are massive carved runic gravestones from the 10th century, found at Jelling in Denmark.
The older of the two Jelling stones was raised by King Gorm the Old in memory of his wife Thyra; the other was raised by their son, Harald Bluetooth, in memory of his parents.
King Gorm was the first king of all of Denmark, and his lineage runs all the way to the current monarch, Queen Margrethe II -- making Denmark the oldest continuously ruled kingdom in the world.

The earliest church was built at around the time of Denmark´s conversion and contained the body of Harald´s father, Gorm, which was transferred from the pagan burial in the north mound to the church when Harald accepted Christianity.
Jelling is the only place in Scandinavia where the grave of a known pagan Viking Age king has been securely identified, and the close dating of the Jelling stone with its distinctive "lion" is very important for studies of Viking art styles.

It cannot be demonstrated though that Jelling was also a domicile during ancient times, but indications exist that this part of the country was densely built-over even then.
The parish of Jelling has shown traces of 80 burial mounds and close to the village there was a sort of bronze-age churchyard with 18 burial mounds indicating that important lineage used to live in Jelling.
