The older of the two Jelling stones was raised by King Gorm the Old in memory of his wife Thyra.
The larger of the two stones was raised by King Gorm's son, Harald Bluetooth in memory of his parents.

Harald Bluetooth erected this stone around the year 965 in memory of his parents, King Gorm and Queen Thyra, and in particular to commemorate the fact that he had converted the Danes to Christianity.
The stone is Denmark's finest runic stone, and the oldest monument to the introduction of Christianity to Denmark.
The stamp's vignette shows two of the stone's sides: one with a lion and snake, and one with the Christ figure in the branches of the Tree of Life.

Initially it was formed as a 170 meters long stone ship expanding from a mount from the bronze age (which is now the center of the big north mount) to south of where the other mount is today.
According to the inscriptions on the stone the stone ship was built by King Gorm as a monument in memory of Queen Thyre.
