  Long Now: About: Press
Finer describes his project as "both music and an integrated part of the landscape and the forces that operate on it and in it".
Joe Strummer once described Finer as the "Bill Wyman of the Pogues", suggesting that without his steadying influence the outfit would disintegrate, and if it wasn't true of the remorseless machine that is Rolling Stones Inc., it was of the Pogues.
Finer's next outfit was the Hieronymus Monk Octet, in which "the Middle Ages collide with the 21st century", apparently.

It will be both a sculptural object in the landscape and a working radio telescope that 'listens' to the universe (tuned to 1420 Mhz, the frequency used by astrophysicists to chart the structure and vastness of the universe).
Jem has been working closely with scientists at the University and the project takes its title from the artist's understanding that, regardless as to whether the universe is finite or infinite, it has no central point, togther with the notion that all individuals perceive the universe exists around themselves.
In parallel with The Centre of the Universe, Jem is also in the process of assembling a collection of O-Maps of the universe and of Oxford, drawn by people from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines including astrophysicists, school children, art students and local people.

The attempt to grow a lawn in the gallery was somewhat compromised by the impounding for quarantine of most of the packets, yet still managed to grow one flower pot full of lush green grass.
Growing out of a fascination with evolving music and the disciplines of Artificial Life and Complexity, and a frustration with the short term vision prevalent at the end of the twentieth century, Longplayer is both a one thousand year long composition and the machine which is being designed and built to play it.

JEM FINER GTR / JEM FINER & ANDREW KÖTTING Visionary Landscapes
GTR and the collaboration with artist and filmmaker Andrew Kötting on Visionary Landscapes evolve in slightly different spheres, yet the musical context is equally as radical and experimental, pushing the boundaries of possible interactions between acoustic instrumentation and electronic distortion to the limit.
Finer’s collaboration with Andrew Kötting was originally performed as a live soundtrack to a three screen projection of outtakes from Kötting’s offbeat debut documentary road movie Gallivant.
Jem Finer’s intricately woven acoustic and electronic textures are immensely poetic and actually provide space for the human soul to wonder in between the circuits and processors, transforming a rational and rigorous mathematical universe into a much more vibrant and lively world.
