 Mini Jem Madness
In 1969, the Mini Jem project was sold to Robin Statham, who improved the body in detail and started to market assembled "turn-key" cars as well as better appointed, painted and trimmed, body shells that only needed a set of running gear to be road-worthy.
Don Ernst raced this Mini Jem (nicknamed the Turtle) in its BRG livery between 1986 and 1989, when he pulled it out of competition for a complete re-work.
Don's Mini Jem has taken its class at Palm Springs, San Diego and won the Index of Performance award for Sports and GT cars under 3-litres as well at The La Carrera Classic in 1988.

Incidentally in spite of the cars' small dimensions it is quite easy for Jem Marsh of Speedex to slip behind the wheel and he is 6 ft. 3 in., although perhaps anyone taller than this would not be able to get in at all.
I must also make it clear that my car is not BNN 369 used by Jem Marsh to win the Goodacre Trophy in 1959 by way of five first places, one second and one fourth.
In the Marsh car an identical box coupled with the 5.125:1 rear axle produced 15 m.p.h per thousand revs and consistent revving to 6000 r.p.m.

 Le Mans Mini Marcos 1966
Jem Marsh was keen to get a Le Mans entry, as he had not had an 'invitation'.
Jem agreed to allocate the distribution rights for France if a Le Mans entry was forthcoming, and we formed a Limited Company, Dulles Components Ltd. to market the Mini Marcos on the Continent.
Jem and I thought that we could not pass up this opportunity in view of the starting money offered, and I have written elsewhere of our, at times hilarious, involvement in that.

The Adams brothers and Jem Marsh realised that to make a good living out of building Marcos cars would require something with a wider appeal than the Xylon, successful though it was as a race car.
No doubt Jem had harboured this desire for some time, but Dave Lewis, the Thames Valley co-ordinator of the Club Marcos International, must be credited with re-awakening it in the factory and their backer, Computacenter.

Jem Marsh and the late Frank Costin of Cosworth fame founded Marcos Cars and, by taking the first three letters of their surnames a distinctive company name was born.
After a 10 year gap and with only a few shillings in his pocket, Jem Marsh was back in business producing sports cars.
But at the age of 72, Jem Marsh has pulled Marcos back from the ashes to form Marcos Engineering, again in the old Wiltshire factory, and in July 2002 launched the TS250.

Jem's cars had many various uses, a later special 'Marshtin' DV 7133 being his 'prop' when working as a stunt driver in the 'Hollywood Motor Maniacs and European Motor Rodeo', an unusual name for a group from neither Europe or the USA!
Jem was an active member of the 750 MC, he had been building his own Austin 7 special and successfully raced it in the 750 MC Formula, winning the 'Goodacre' Championship at the end of 1959.
For the 1960 racing season and onwards the 'Jem Marsh Trophy' was presented to the best turned out car, based on the scrutineer's opinion, that had competed in five or more 750 Formula races encouraging quality and presentation.

The plan was that Jem Marsh should manage, and we design and develop, the XP; that was the car that Marcos were going to put into production.' For a time the outfit operated from yet more makeshift premises -a workshop next door to Paddy Gaston's in Kingston.

During 1970 he converted a Mk1 Sprite to Group 6 Regs and won his class and set fastest lap in the Mugello 500km.Over the next few years he developed the Mk1 Sprite, making it one of the fastest in Modsports, winning his class (3rd overall) in the STP Modsports Championship.
In 1973 he acquired the works Mini Jem, abandoning the unreliable 1275cc, blown engine for a more reliable 1143cc unit.
With this he won his class in the 1975 BARC Championship and took overall victory in the 1976 Championship.

The story starts in 1953 when Jem Marsh bought his first car, a part built Austin Seven Special from "somewhere near Brooklands" and rebuilt it with the help of his stepfather Anton De La Rue.
Following a collision between the Special and a lorry that put Jem in hospital with a broken leg and internal injuries, he decided to rebuild the car again.
Nic and I were lucky enough to meet both Jem Marsh and Stan Gray in October 2003 at Jem’s house in Wiltshire to chat about their reminiscences of the car and racing life.

The car was designed by Brian Moulton (see Brian's notes) with Malcolm Newell (photo, 39k) as pattern maker, along the same lines as the Mini Jem but clearly not a copy.
The Mini Marcos was somewhat simpler in construction and rather untidy at the front with a large flat radiator box angled downwards under the nose.

Orchids are basically a hobby to Dr. Marsh and he is able to take advantage of the sterile hood and autoclaves at the lab for flasking and cloning.
Dr Marsh began growing orchids as a teen in the mid 50's in Winchester, Kentucky, and was extremely fortunate to have Blue Grass Orchids run by Craig Foster nearby, and a sage mentor, Katherine Stewart, who laid the foundation of his orchid knowledge.
Five generations of barkeria hybrids and a number of registered crosses later, Dr Marsh has again expanded his interests to include Texas native plants and considers them to be the perfect foil for orchids in arrangements.

 PH: RE: Farboud GTS inches closer to production
News emerged yesterday at MPH04 that Arash Farboud has linked up with Chris Marsh (son of Marcos founder Jem Marsh) to take the Farboud GTS into production.
Marsh has moved on from his involvement with the Invicta S1 to found Farboud Sports Cars Ltd. Arash Farboud is a shareholder of the new company as well as retaining the original Farboud Ltd which will manage marketing and promotion.
Coupled with this news is the scoop that Farboud is to switch to using Ford Duratech V6s in place of the more bespoke and costly modified Audi V6 motor that has been installed to date.
