  David Lynch - musicolog.com
Lynch's next foray was, surprisingly enough, into television; his 1990 series, "Twin Peaks," a twisted prime-time soap about the dark secrets in a seemingly placid town in the Pacific Northwest, was the darling of critics if not audiences.
Lynch's 1990 film Wild at Heart the director's discursive, fantasy-laden road movie, won the Palme d'Or at Cannes but wildly divided viewers in the States, many of whom felt the director had descended into self-parody.
Lynch appeared as an actor in the little-seen feature Zelly and Me (1988), took a small role as an FBI chief in "Twin Peaks" and Fire Walk With Me He also directed Chris Issak's music video "Wicked Game." His daughter Jennifer Chambers Lynch made a notorious debut as writer-director with the much-discussed Boxing Helena (1993).

Boxing Helena (Jennifer Chambers Lynch, 1993)
The most Lynch manages is a couple of shocks upon the revelation of each of Helena’s progressive stages of limblessness - but all one sees of that is Fenn without her arms in her sleeves or legs beneath her night-gown.
Lynch pere would have undoubtedly jumped in with scenes of Fenn trying to escape by crawling on her limbless stumps or of Julian Sands making love to her amputated body, but Jennifer has a very, very different film than that in mind.
Lynch is not sure how to end the film and uses one of the corniest devices in the book - the it-was-all-a-dream ending - which produced howls of outrage from the film’s critics.

Review: Boxing Helena   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Jennifer Chambers Lynch has borrowed from her father's bizarre technique and style, and the elder Lynch's own response to the film is that he (not surprisingly) "really liked it." After watching the film, however, it's not hard to understand why Kim Basinger backed out of the title role at the last minute.
Of course, if one assumes that Chambers Lynch is going for dark comedy, that changes the viewer's entire perspective.
If Chambers Lynch wanted ambiguity, she should have left things as they were; if she wanted a clear resolution, she should have added a few more minutes of footage.
