Thought to be at the height of her competitive career at the time, Thompson was expected to win up to five gold medals at those Olympics.

Thompson started her journey to the Great White Way eight years ago, moving to New York right after getting out of school at the University of Michigan.
But the workshop was a success and so was Thompson's performance, enabling her to originate a role in a Broadway musical rather than follow in somebody else's footsteps.

The New Blonde in the Bubble
Jennifer Laura Thompson took over the role of Glinda about a week ago, and from everything that I have read so far she's doing a great job.
I can only imagine the difficulties that JLT faced taking over this role that had previously been played by an actress who is not just so beloved by the theather community, but who the role was written for.
JLT is getting rave reviews from Kristin Chenowith zealots, no easy task and is reported to have great chemistry with Idina.

I like Jennifer Laura Thompson, but she wasn't Galinda to me. I didn't like Megan Hilty much at all.
As for Jennifer Laura Thompson, I never saw her live but I've seen clips and photos of her as Glinda and she doesn't really seem like Glinda to me. I saw Megan Hilty in N.Y in January and she was, in my opinion, better than Kristen.
What I've seen of JLT just doesn't cut it for me. I've only seen Stacie Morgain Lewis's Popular, which was good, but I've heard that she upstages a lot.

Thompson is now combining two other roles: the comical Glinda in the hit musical Wicked at the Gershwin Theatre and new mother to eight-month-old baby boy Tommy.
I recently had the chance to chat with the talented Thompson, who is in the midst of determining how to juggle these two challenging roles.
JLT: The initial audition was your basic "learn a couple of scenes and one of the songs" — "Popular" and a tidbit from the opening, "No One Mourns" — I think they wanted to hear some soprano and make sure that [part of my range] was there.
