Ward Smith, a former trustee at Case Western Reserve University and former president and chairman of the Musical Arts Association, died August 15 at his home in Hunting Valley.
Smith served as a Case trustee from 1979 to 2002, and became an honorary university trustee last year.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Gretchen; a son, Jonathan, of Los Angeles; three daughters, Jennifer Collison of Kennett Square, Pa.; Meredith Weil of Cleveland; and Sarah of New York; five grandchildren; and a brother.

Upon returning to her home after graduation, Jennifer Meredith Smith entered politics, and in 1998 her Progressive Labour Party won the general election, making her Bermuda's leader.
According to a December 2002 article in rg magazine, Smith was working in the newspaper business when she was drafted in 1972 to run for a seat in Parliament, solely because the other candidate would otherwise have been unopposed.
Smith will be honored tonight at a reception and she will receive her honorary degree tomorrow at the Art Institute's graduation at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall.

William Alexander Scott (born 1940) was the Premier of Bermuda and the leader of the Progressive Labour Party beginning 29 July 2003.
He was appointed Premier when the PLP was re-elected in parliamentary elections and the party leader at that time, Jennifer Meredith Smith, was overthrown hours after the election results were certified when a split between the elected members of the party surfaced.
With the two sides split 13 members each, Smith agreed to step aside with Scott as the compromise choice.
