 Denver - Music - KEEP TRYNIN - westword.com
Trynin's melodies, her skill at pulling brawny riffs from her guitar, and her observational/confessional lyrics have led to a slew of flattering comparisons; Rolling Stone recently likened her to Liz Phair, the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde and (no, this isn't a misprint) Joni Mitchell.
Trynin is appreciative of the attention, but she's bothered by that stereotypical something that lurks just beneath the surface of these kudos.

Jennifer released an EP (See the review of "Trespassing" in Issue Number 13 (1989) - ed.) on Pathfinder Records in 1988 that could have fit very neatly tacked onto the end of Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark album (and that's a compliment - she's no clone!).
She disappeared from the recording scene for a while and has resurfaced with a band in Boston.
Jennifer has recently signed with Warner Brothers who will reissue Cockamamie in the summer of 1995.

Trynin throws more left curves into her songs, exploring the abstract possibilities of Denneen's keyboard loops, her own guitar textures, and her multilayered vocals (the voices are all hers, even the slowed-down, very male-sounding ones on "Around It").
Trynin reports that Warners suggested she change the title because Wal-Mart might not carry an album that mentions guns.
But Trynin also had to hit the road with big money and expectations riding on her, only to come back home with a few good reviews, a bit of airplay, and less-than-phenomenal sales of Cockamamie, which she'd previously released on her own Squint label.

So, you might not remember Jennifer Trynin as a pop musician - even when her single was nearly a hit, no one could remember the song’s title - but if her songs are half as good as her memoir, the music industry missed out on a solid talent.

Jennifer Trynin - Biography - AOL Music
Jennifer Trynin claims no real influences on her melodic pop songs, which generally examine failed relationships, since the only record she has ever owned is her debut album, Cockamamie.
Trynin recorded it on her own Squint label at age 31 while simultaneously running her own desktop publishing business.
As the album found its way into the hands of studio executives, a bidding war for Trynin's talents ensued, and she eventually chose Warner Brothers, which re-released Cockamamie as originally recorded.

The irony is that when Trynin performed at T.T.'s recently, for an audience that was likely as tiny as any she's had in her career, she was enjoying herself as much as I've ever seen her -- certainly more so than when the same club was packed to capacity upon Cockamamie's release.

 TrouserPress.com :: Jennifer Trynin
First issued independently on the Boston-based singer/songwriter's own label, Jennifer Trynin's Cockamamie was released nationally in June 1995, at precisely the same time as Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill.
This was initially a good thing: Trynin's smart, self-sufficient-woman rock songs were reviewed favorably next to Morissette's jilted-lover rants, and many critics wrote that Trynin was the one to watch.
That's a shame, because Cockamamie (recorded as a trio with a rhythm section) is a vital, astonishingly mature debut, full of defiantly hooky power pop kept in check by an endless supply of surly asides and Trynin's ear for bitter blues-soaked recrimination.

 Jennifer Trynin - Cockamamie (1995)
If they had their way, the promotions department of Squint Records would have you know that Jennifer Trynin is bad, but in a good way.
It helps that Trynin's got a thoroughly appealing voice, sort of a cross between Meryn Cadell and Maggie Estep (who don't sell as much as Harvey or Phair, so of course Squint couldn't use them as comparisons) or a female Matthew Sweet (whose being a male creates its own comparison problems).
Either way, Jennifer Trynin can duke it out with herself in public and watching will definitely be worth the price of admission.
