If everything seems acted and timed to perfection, it is because it is. Jennifer Westfeldt and Heather Juergensen, the two writers and stars, performed this show on stage before this film.
She is single, neurotic, Jewish woman nearing thirty and desparate for a smart, funny man. Either all her dates (amusing portrayed in succession) are horrific, or she is much too picky.
But Westfeldt does such a fresh and amusing job that it is forgiveable.

The film's commentary with Westfeldt & Juergensen is so full of delight, energy, enthusiasm & interesting backstory, for fans of the film it will be almost as entertaining as the feature itself.
Nondescriptly pretty, entertainingly insecure copy editor Jessica Stein (Jennifer Westfeldt) has had it up to her 30-year-old eyeballs with bad dates and dysfunctional relationships -- and we can see why in a quick and comical montage of the men with whom she's been fixed up.
The script was honed over several years by co-stars Westfeldt and Juergensen, who adapted it from their short-lived but buzz-generating off-off-Broadway play of dating scene vignettes entitled "Lipschtick."

This last weekend, I rented the DVD of the film “Kissing Jessica Stein” and found it to be a delightful and innovative film about human relationships.
The 2001 film “Kissing Jessica Stein” was written by Jennifer Westfeldt and Heather Juergensen and features Westfeldt and Juergensen as the main characters.
In the film Westfeldt plays Jessica Stein, a New York City journalist who can't find a man. A scene close to the beginning of the film shows Stein going out with several different men who all turn her off with some annoying aspect of their dinner conversations.

Meanwhile producer/screenwriter/costars Westfeldt and Juergensen are chatty and light-hearted and clearly still excited at their film, a feeling that also pervades their documentary.
Jessica Stein (Jennifer Westfeldt) is a nice, young Jewish girl who cannot find herself a man. Based on the montage of some of the worst (and funniest) first dates in history, a reasonable course of action would be for Jessica to just stop looking.
Westfeldt and Juergensen first created and played the characters of Jessica and Helen for their stage play "Lipschtick," which certainly explains why they are both so totally comfortable in their roles.

The film stars Jennifer Westfeldt as the title character, who in her late twenties has begun to experience feelings of loneliness and repression from countless dates with losers who do everything from sticking her with half the bill to pouring out endless come-ons without the common courtesy of subtlety.
Her mother, played with terrific comic warmth by Tovah Feldshuh, is that everpresent force in her daughter's life that cries out, "Get married already!" She even sees fit to argue with her own mother in the middle of a Day of Atonement service over which man in the congregation is right for Jessica.
Actresses Westfeldt and Juergensen, the writers of the movie's screenplay, have fashioned their characters in ways that so many movies of this genre are afraid to exercise.
