Oliver Kamm: More on ideological apology for terror
Dr Tonge gave not the slightest indication that she was aware of the moral import of remarks that would have been culpable had they been off-hand, but which she made even worse by devoting the best part of a day to uttering judgements of stupefying frivolity to various media.
Jenny made a brave attempt to try to bring attention to the fact that if the appalling suicide bombings are to stop, then we need to understand and address the desperation and political alienation that leads [sic] to such awful acts of violence.
Jenny did not demonstrate that wisdom and so her point was lost in the reaction to it.

Dr. Tonge, 62, made her remarks in various occasions, saying, "I do not forgive the suicide bombers," but followed up by saying, "I am also aware why people there become suicide bombers, it is out of despair." She asserted that if she was in their place, she would have considered to be one herself.
Tonge insisted on her statement, which angered the pro-Israel lobby in the UK adding that she does not support the explosive operations, but that does not mean she does not understand their motives.
Tonge explained that these operations result from despondency, and while a lot of people oppose to these operations, she understands its reasons, reasserting that "I think if I had to live in that situation, and I say this advisedly, I might just consider becoming one myself."

Jenny Tonge, a senior and highly respected Liberal Democrat MP, who has consistently campaigned on issues of individual rights and freedoms, has been removed as the party's spokesperson for children after her remarks were seized by the Israeli embassy in London, the Conservatives and, mostly, right-wing commentators who said they amounted to supporting terrorism.
