Yet a few important steps were taken for the development of archeology.
Another step was advanced by Christian J. Thomsen and JensJacobAsmussenWorsaae.
According to the then-currently prevailing theory, a theory shaped more by human prejudices, and less by the hard facts of discovery, iron tools were used by poor people whereas bronze tools were used by the rich, during the same time period.
Thomsen and Worsaae argued that the type of metal had to do more with the age in which the implements were produced than with the financial status of the users.
Their investigations in 1840 brought forth empirical proof, and thus the theory of a three-age system [stone age, iron age, and bronze age] was strengthened.

It is only within the last 100 years that there was a common acceptance that collections of archaeological objects should be retained for future scientific purposes and as an aid to studying the past.
As a result large numbers of items are now only known to come from Ireland or in many cases have been exported to other countries.
This project hopes to rediscover material which has been exported and re-identify objects which have lost their provenance through the re-evaluation of antiquarian drawings (see Worsaae who collected copious drawings of Irish material during his visit to Ireland in 1846-7) and through the establishment of a database of dealers, collections and auctions.
