  Jensen Interceptor   (1953-1958) history, pictures.
The Jensen Interceptor, however, does definitely possess that big-engine, high-gear charm of the past, but offers it in modern guise with the degree of smooth operation that a well-designed six-cylinder engine can give when it is running comfortably within its speed capacity.
On the smooth concrete surface of the Jabbeke road the Interceptor was perfectly steady and comfortable at its maximum, which was held for perhaps a couple of miles, and the steering wheel could be released.
The Interceptor is well equipped, and has a heater and demister installation, also an inspection lamp and connection socket, in addition to the fittings already mentioned.

Jensen Interceptor - Modern Racer - Modern Classics
The fact was that, though Jensen liked to think of itself as an auto manufacturer, it was primarily a body builder that assembled a few cars bearing its own name on the side.
Somewhat oddly, Jensen, which had begun as a body building company, then commissioned the Italian house of Vignale to construct the Touring design as the next-generation Interceptor body, a sophisticated and manly two-door with a low cowl, low beltline and the aforementioned fishbowl rear glass.
A reorganized Jensen successor company then failed as well and the Interceptor, a rare example of inspired parts-bin engineering, was lost to the auto world forever.

Jensen later used the jigs and tools, which were sent by Vignale to the West Bromwich factory.
Jensen offered a four-wheel-drive version of the Interceptor dubbed the FF; the four wheel drive system was developed by tractor manufacturer Harry Ferguson, making the FF one of the most technically sophisticated cars of its era, especially since it was one of the first production cars to have mechanical anti-lock brakes.
The Jensen Healey and GT never sold in the kind of volume needed to be profitable (the GT only sold 509 copies), probably because they were priced relatively high for the level of performance, and were somewhat too large for the powerplant.

CanadianDriver: Motoring Memories - Jensen Interceptor
The English Jensen brothers, Richard and Allan, of West Bromwich, Staffordshire, were not immune to the lure of the large, slow-turning powerplant and the spirited performance of a high power-to-weight ratio.
The Jensens built their reputation as auto stylists and custom body builders in the 1930s, and toward the end of the decade produced some cars powered by Ford V-8 (both 60 and 85 hp versions) and Nash straight eights.
Although the Jensen staff had designed a new model, which it showed to the public in 1965, Jensen management was dissatisfied with it and insisted that the company go to an Italian designer for its new car.

The Interceptor was briefly re-introduced in the 1980s as the Series 4 (S4), as a low-volume 'specialist' motor car in much the same way Bristol continue to market and manufacture their cars.

Other differences include deeper footwells than the Interceptor, and a slightly longer bonnet, which allows for the front differential to be mounted at the front left side of the engine.

When Richard Jensen first saw the Austin Sheerline he was convinced its styling had been copied from his company's yet-to-be-released Straight Eight saloon, which had been displayed the year before.
Jensen won the contract to build the bodies for the so-called A40 Sports, which was in essence a smaller version of the 1949 Jensen Interceptor (both cars having been styled by Jensen's Eric Neale).
Styled by William Towns (of Minissima fame), the roadster was joined in 1975 by the stylish Jensen GT coupe; however, Jensen Motors Ltd was in serious financial trouble by this time, and the company folded the following year.

During the Interceptor III production run, Jensens reverted to the type of chassis numbering sequence used for the Series Is. In this, all cars were numbered in one sequence irrespective of whether they were RHD, LHD, SPs or Saloons.
Of all the models made over the years by Jensens, it is the Interceptor IIIs which display by far the greatest range of colours — something like 70 different paints were used throughout the production run of the 71–73 cars with another 10 or so colours used on their successors.

Jensen was one of those typically British car manufacturers which concentrated on low volume luxury car production.
The Interceptor was based on the underpinnings of the Austin A70 saloon and featured the 3993 cc 6-cylinder in-line engine from the Austin Sheerline limousine.
The Interceptor was not so much a sports car as it was a comfortable grand tourer; it was a silent running car, capable of travelling at high speeds without much strain thanks to the oversized engine matched to a manual 4-speed gearbox with overdrive.

The Jensen FF was an all wheel drive GT car produced by the British manufacturer Jensen between 1966 and 1971.
Its price was high—about 30% higher than the Jensen Interceptor, its similar-looking rear wheel drive stablemate, and more than that of luxury GTs from much more prestigious makes.
By the early 1970s, Jensen's primary markets were overseas (particularly the United States), and the FF could not be sold there.
