Jensen Motors - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jensen Motors was a British manufacturer of sports cars based in West Bromwich (in the West Midlands west of Birmingham).
Jensen began as a small coachbuilding firm run by brothers Richard and Alan Jensen; they bought out the body works of W.J. Smiths and Sons where they worked after the owner's death and renamed it Jensen Motors in 1936.
In the years leading up to World War II Jensen produced a small number of cars and commercial bodies for trucks and buses.

Jensen continued to be commercial body builders for their main business and the cars were more of an interesting sideline than a serious enterprise.
Jensen had continued as coachbuilders throughout the 1960s with a contract from Austin to build the Austin-Healey sports car bodies, so when this came to an end their financial backers, the Norcros Group, decided that an Italian designed GT car would fill the gap.
Jensen Motors Ltd was put into the hands of the receiver and was closed in May 1976.

Jensen Motors laid off its workforce yesterday and said it was considering relocating luxury sports cars production to a lower-cost country, possibly South Africa.
Jensen was established by two brothers in the 1930s and became a classic brand after the second world war but hit trouble in the early 1970s fuel crisis and shut up shop.
It was revived as Jensen Motors in 1998 after receiving local grants estimated at £500,000 and had built up a workforce of 40 which was told late on Monday not to turn up for work.

Specifically, Jensen contends that the damages awarded to him at trial under his breach of employment contract counterclaim against his former employer Fremont Motors Cody, Inc. (Fremont) are wages and, as such, the district court was required to award him attorney fees, interest, and costs.
Jensen then filed a counterclaim asserting that he was entitled to additional wages based on the $8,000 guarantee and other contract damages.
Jensen further claimed that should he prevail in showing wages justly due, he would be entitled to interest at the rate of eighteen percent (18%) per annum from the date of termination, reasonable attorney fees, and all costs of suit pursuant to Wyo. Stat.

While Jensen continued to build the Austin-Healey 100, they discontinued the use of Austin components for their own cars, and in 1962 the Jensen CV-8 was launched powered by a Chrysler V8 engine that had been supplied direct by Chrysler, complete with their excellent Torqueflite automatic transmission.
Jensen planned this new car for the US market and thought the appeal to the Americans would be great as on account of it being British built, but with the familiarity of a home-grown engine.
With the connection between Jensen and Austin, as well as the relationship between Donald Healey and Austin, being a distant memory, Jensen lurched from one crisis to the next, but it was the energy crisis of 1974 that carried Jensen to the brink of total collapse.

CanadianDriver: Motoring Memories - Jensen Interceptor
The English Jensen brothers, Richard and Allan, of West Bromwich, Staffordshire, were not immune to the lure of the large, slow-turning powerplant and the spirited performance of a high power-to-weight ratio.
The Jensens built their reputation as auto stylists and custom body builders in the 1930s, and toward the end of the decade produced some cars powered by Ford V-8 (both 60 and 85 hp versions) and Nash straight eights.
Although the Jensen staff had designed a new model, which it showed to the public in 1965, Jensen management was dissatisfied with it and insisted that the company go to an Italian designer for its new car.

 Connections: Jensen
When Richard Jensen first saw the Austin Sheerline he was convinced its styling had been copied from his company's yet-to-be-released Straight Eight saloon, which had been displayed the year before.
Jensen won the contract to build the bodies for the so-called A40 Sports, which was in essence a smaller version of the 1949 Jensen Interceptor (both cars having been styled by Jensen's Eric Neale).
Styled by William Towns (of Minissima fame), the roadster was joined in 1975 by the stylish Jensen GT coupe; however, Jensen Motors Ltd was in serious financial trouble by this time, and the company folded the following year.
