Jephtha - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jephtha (יפתח) is a character in the Old Testament who served as one of the Judges in Israel for a period of six years (Judges 12:7) between the conquest of Canaan and the first king.
Jephtha lived in Gilead and was a member of the Tribe of Manasseh.
Jephtha (Jephthah) was an oratorio (1751) by Handel based on the story of Jephtha with a libretto by the Rev. Thomas Morell, following Judges (Chapter 11) and Jephthas sive votum - "Jeptha or the Vow"(1554) by George Buchanan.

As the MIT Handel scholar Ellen Harris indicated in her moving pre-Cantata-Singers-concert talk, Handel completed Jephtha's long first act in 12 days, and all but the final chorus of the long second act in 11 days.
Jephtha was cast out by his half-brothers because of his mother's shady past.
Baritone David Kravitz was, as usual, excellent in the key secondary role of Zebul, Jephtha's half-brother, and soprano Karyl Ryczek made a brief but glowing appearance as the Angel.

The Bible says that Jephtha was the son of a harlot, and that he was disinherited and sent by his father's legitimate sons into exile, where he earned a reputation as a valorous sort of scoundrel.

Jephtha, and its immediate predecessor Theodora, are more contemplative, examining the nature of religion, choice and death.
It is certainly significant that Handel was approaching the end of his life; he had already had a number of strokes and had to abandon the writing of Jephtha because he lost the sight in his eyes.

Indeed, Jephtha's rash vow and the sacrifice of his own daughter is hardly the subject of Mennonite sermons at the turn of the 2nd millennium.
For example in the concordantia caritatis, which aimed at aiding clerics in the preparation of homilies, the lament of the daughters of Israel over Jephtha's daughter (Judges 11: 40) is paired analogously with the lament of the women under the cross (Luke 23: 27), and the lament over Josias (2.

Perhaps because the ending was not the key to his dramatic conception of 'Jephtha' and we must look at Handel’s private circumstances at the time of composition if we wish to understand how Handel viewed ‘Jephtha’.

The oratorio is preceded on the concert program by the orchestra's presentation of a Suite in D major drawn from Handel's "Water Music," which includes the famous "Hornpipe," featuring the horns and trumpets.
"Jephtha," Handel's last oratorio, was written in 1751 and first performed the following year.
Its language is based largely on the Old Testament story found in Judges 11 in which Jephtha leads the Israelites into a battle which frees them from the oppressive Ammonites.

If Jephtha is to be truly dramatic, its first half must reek of morally and spiritually nauseating hubris, for only then can Jephtha’s fall convince and the chorus’s cry of “Whatever is is Right”, an implacable statement of eighteenth-century Christian Stoicism, provide its stark lesson on the nature of suffering.
It is Jephtha’s false understanding of the will of God which propels the story, and that this does not come across strongly enough is a key blemish in an otherwise fine performance by Nicholas McGegan and his musicians.
Ainsley’s and McGegan’s representation of Jephtha as an old campaigner recounting his deeds of derring-do in ‘His mighty Arm’ are entirely persuasive.
