XMEL.ORG - Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky (Chmielnicki)
The most notorious practitioner of szlachta terror tactics was Jeremi Wisniowiecki, the wealthiest magnate in the land.
When the rebellion caught him on his estates on the Left Bank, Wisniowiecki mustered his well trained private army of 6000, gathered together as many of the terrified nobles, priests, and Jews as he could, and set off on an epic, roundabout retreat to the west.
Although Wisniowiecki's feats won him adulation in Poland, they so infuriated the Ukrainian masses that they would brook no talk of compromise and vowed to fight him to the death.

ORANGE REVOLUTION :: On the Threshold of Choice   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
It is no accident that the first redaction of this novel bore the brief and witty sub-title “A Turncoat.” Ambition, thirst for power, and not least of all, myopia stemming from membership in a certain estate turned Wisniowiecki into Ukraine’s most implacable enemy, who betrayed the memory of his glorious grandfather.
The writer uses Wisniowiecki’s life and early death as a background for discussing the values of high society (amply represented by the protagonist) and the lower classes.
Unable to understand their own people, turncoats like Wisniowiecki and, much to our regret, aristocratic hetmans of the Vyhovsky type inevitably sink into historical limbo.

Much Ukrainian is spoken in the film and Ukrainian music pervades the score, though of standard folkloric rather than an authentic bardic duma type.
Wisniowiecki emerges as the only figure who analyzes events and situations, even discussing social questions.
Yet with all this, many Ukrainians will be troubled by the film.
