Jeremiah McLain Rusk (June 17, 1830 - November 21, 1893) was the 15th Governor of Wisconsin from 1882 - 1889.
But when the captain received the order it had a different meaning and he ordered his men to pick out a man and shoot to kill when the order is given.
Several people were killed and Governor Rusk took the majority of the blame.

Rusk was born February 6, 1825, in Perry County, Ohio, and first looked over the land in this vicinity in 1852.
But it was due to the efforts of Allen Rusk - brother of Jeremiah McLain Rusk, who was governor of Wisconsin from 1882 to 1889 - that the township of Liberty was organized in 1858, and it was Rusk who suggested the name.
The first town officers elected in 1858 were Allen Rusk, Chairman; Samuel Graham and George Martin, supervisors; Samuel C. Fish, Clerk; John R. Joseph, Treasurer; and Rusk and Graham, justices of the peace.

Jeremiah McLain Rusk served as a lieutenant colonel in the Twenty-fifth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War and was brevetted brigadier general for "conspicuous gallantry." He became a prominent Republican politician and was popularly known as "Uncle Jerry." Rusk served as the U.S. Representative from Wisconsin (1871-77) and as Wisconsin's governor (1882-89).
President Benjamin Harrison appointed him U.S. secretary of agriculture in 1889 and he served until 1893.

Have you discovered the genealogy passage in a biography of Jeremiah McLain Rusk, Gov. of Wisconsin and first U.S. Sec.
It traces his line back to a Irish immigrant, James Rusk (ca, 1755-1820)who came over as a bondsman from northern Ireland (near Londonderry), and fought in the Revolutionary War.
I wonder if his brother, William (ca.1785-1840)of Ohio is the same William of about the same date and location in my family line in Missouri.

Settled in 1836 and named for either two Rusk brothers, doctors in the Civil War, who were born here, or Jeremiah McLain Rusk, congressman and Secretary of Agriculture.
