Ostriker was probably the most important single figure in convincing the astronomical community that this very natural assumption is wrong, by advocating a radical new model for galaxies in which the system of visible stars in only a minor pollutant at the centre of a much larger halo of dark matter.
Ostriker has pioneered the development of sophisticated numerical simulations of the evolution of the early universe and the formation of structure in cosmology, including galaxies, clusters of galaxies, and the intergalactic medium.
Ostriker has made major contributions to an exceptionally broad range of other topics as well: the structure and oscillations of rotating stars, the stability of galaxies, the evolution of globular clusters and other star systems, pulsars, X-ray binary stars, the dynamics of clusters of galaxies, gravitational lensing, astrophysical blast waves, and quasars.

NEW LIGHT ON DARK MATTER: Testing Cosmogonic Models with Gravitational Lensing
Ostriker, along with scientists Guohong Xu and Renyue Cen, is using Pittsburgh Supercomputig Center 's CRAY T3D to test competing theoretical models of cosmological origin, each of which offers a blueprint for the embryonic universe.
This project is one of the largest supercomputing efforts ever undertaken and occurs under the auspices of the Grand Challenge Cosmology Consortium (GC), a collaborative effort among physicists and computer scientists at six universities and research centers.
Because of limited computing capability, a prior modeling effort by the Ostriker group melded low resolution universe models with high resolution models, producing a portion of the universe that was quite small in cosmological terms (five megaparsecs).

Since joining the Physics and Astronomy Departments in Berkeley in 1974, he has devoted much of his research to studying processes in the interstellar medium, including evaporation of clouds, the structure of shock waves in atomic and molecular gas, and the dynamics of blast waves in both homogeneous and inhomogeous media.
In collobration with Jeremiah Ostriker (Princeton University), he developed the three-phase model of the interstellar medium, which has been widely used to organize and interpret observational data.
His research on quasars has included development of the relativistic blast wave model for variability, introduction of reverberation mapping to analyze variable emission line profiles, the two-phase model for quasar emission line regions, and the development of the theory of coronae and winds from accretion disks.

 Star Light, Star Bright
To people such as Princeton cosmologist Jeremiah Ostriker and Nickolay Gnedin, his collaborator at the University of California, Berkeley, this moment marks a singular phase in the evolution of the cosmos.
Using NCSA's SGI CRAY Origin2000, Ostriker and Gnedin carried out a series of simulations that for the first time provide detailed understanding of this stage in the growth of the universe.
Unlike prior studies of this period, Ostriker and Gnedin's simulation is a fully nonlinear, 3D treatment that includes hydrodynamics, the physics that describes how matter in the early universe cools after the very hot, early moments of the Big Bang and collapses under the force of gravity into gas clumps that become the first stars.
