Enduring Love: Jeremy Sams: Film Music on the Web CD Reviews April 2006   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Presumably referring to the tracks with which the film was ‘temped’ with, Sams writes in his booklet notes, “I won’t bother name-checking the composers whose influence is all over this score.
Sams’ remarks are an insight into the compositional process for film, dialogue with a director, and of the need for musicians to communicate in a dramatic language rather than a musical one when writing for film.
Sams explains in the liner notes that this cue was written five times before it satisfied the needs of the scene – it’s this sort of careful iterative process that produces great film music moments like that.

With its plot in which a young drama-disapproving Quaker woman not only becomes smitten by a roving player but develops a belated crush on the works of Shakespeare, this comedy both celebrates theatre and affectionately takes the Thespis (so to speak) out of thespians.
Sams has added quite a few good gags of his own.

Jeremy Samsversion of Brecht's lyrics were used first by the Young Vic in1992, and then in 1994-- along with Robert David MacDonald's dialog-- for a production at the Donmar Warehouse venue in London.
In the Boston area, Sams' verses were heard several seasons ago for a production at the A.R.T. using a book prepared by Michael Feingold.
While Sams' lyrics are harsher than Blitzstein's, they are somewhat harder to sing clearly, less poetic, and often less apt.

Jeremy Sams's splendidly cast revival in the Lyttelton is undoubtedly a joy and a riot, but through the first half of the evening, I felt that its location, in the temple of Art that is the National Theatre, had a slightly deadening effect on the proceedings.
Sams deftly accelerates the action, spiralling it towards the panic stations caused by missed cues, missed actors, missing contact lenses and sheer mistakes: athletic actors hurtle and tumble out of doors, break out in mute backstage violence, while a sheikh and his wife end up tied together in quite the wrong way.

Though Jeremy Sams's new script is a great improvement on the Dahl version - properly integrating the naturalistic and the fantasy sequences, avoiding the cheat of a conclusion and serving up much better jokes, most of them at the expense of the Germans (hurrah) - there is something deeply cynical about this show.

In the pleasingly detailed liner notes, Sams notes that the director didn't want too much commentary on the obsession, rather more a background edginess.
Although much is on a fairly intimate level, the two Passacaglias, together with the closing passages of A Drunken Conversation with Myself wind up the tension with a repeating figure onto which Sams piles layers of sound and musical stress.
The Finale is like a musical exhalation where all the built up tension is let out in a final blow out and some of the musical lines are allowed to resolve rather than going round and round in circles.

The trade was a reasonable one, because Sams’ translation of “Moritat” erases all memories of a swinging Bobby Darin and replaces them with a cold-hearted catalogue of Macheath’s crimes, sung by a woman who has also suffered at his hands.
It is disappointing that, even with the stellar translation of Jeremy Sams and a company of good singers able to solidly sing Kurt Weill’s music, Open Fist was not able to come up with a knock-‘em-dead production of Threepenny Opera.

Forward momentum, indeed, would seem to be the watchword for Sams and designer Robert Jones, who open the show with the nuns processing, holding flickering candles and singing "Dixit Dominus" in front of a gauze.
Yet when the children (a superbly crisp set of performances at the final preview) sing the title song to their father in seven-part harmony, only those with hearts of reinforced concrete will fail to be moved.
By this point, what has become abundantly clear is that where most recent British directors have patronizingly insisted upon "unearthing" the drama of classic musicals at the expense of the music, Sams (also a composer) understands the primacy of the score in all its magnificently orchestrated glory.

You think you see him, then he darts away from you: a reluctant libertine, an ‘honorable’ collaborator, a man with an identity crisis who embraces martyrdom almost with a sense of relief as one who has finally found his reason for living.
I don’t quite know how Jacobi achieves all this, mind you, because Jeremy Sams’ joky translation—‘I see you’re a man I can do business with,’ says Henry at one point; ‘ah, a spot of creative accounting,’ he says at another—true to current translating trends, is awash in modernisms.
