Guardian Unlimited Film | Features | Better Ned than dead
But Jerilderie has an ace to play: in February 1879, it was victim of a crime unique in the history of banditry.
The whole town was bailed up, the entire population held hostage, the police locked in their own cells, the bank robbed, and a pseudo-political manifesto dictated by the perpetrator.
Not far behind, though, was Jerilderie's tormentor: an illiterate horse thief and cop killer called Edward Kelly, known to admirers and pursuers alike as Ned.

Hastings' milky brew might go down a treat in the small town of Jerilderie, about 465 miles southwest of Sydney, but it is unlikely to impress at a Buckingham Palace garden party.
Hastings said the royal revelation had little impact on his life, except when some of Jerilderie's 1,100 residents rib him with a rendition of God Save the King and tug their forelocks at the local pub.

The novel is presented as having been hastily written on scraps of paper by Ned Kelly himself, and it expands on the story told in the real life Jerilderie Letter.
Carey departs from what is known about Kelly's life by providing him with a lover and a daughter, for whom he has been recording his life history whilst on the run from the police.
In a curious effort to attract American readers to the story, the book's publisher, Alfred Knopf, heralded the book as a "great American novel", even though it is completely based in Australia and involving Australian characters and events.
