To that end, both the state's topographically prominent county highpoints and less significant hills (or even mere mounds) must be reached - be it by driving or climbing as the individual locations warrant.
Jerimoth Hill, the highest point in both Rhode Island and Providence County serves as example.
While state highpointers for years accepted driving RI 101 to the point closest to the summit of to count for a visit to that state's highest point due to access issues, county highpointers require that one visit the slightly higher rock outcrop at the actual summit to claim.

Jerimoth Hill is the name of the highest natural point in the U.S. state of Rhode Island, at 812 feet (247 m) above sea level.
Jerimoth Hill is located in Providence County in the town of Foster, near the Connecticut border.
There was so much pressure on Richardson to let highpointers cross through his property that Richardson's son finally gave permission to the hikers in 1998 by allowing hikers to get to the highpoint on selected national holidays.

Jerimoth, the pride of Foster township near the Connecticut border, is the littlest state's highest point.
To reach Jerimoth Hill from the Boston area, take Interstate 95 south to Providence, then Route 6 west, and then Route 101 west (Hartford Pike) to Foster, R.I. As you near the Connecticut border, about 18 miles from Providence, you pass a Citgo gas station, and a sign for Burgess Road on your left.
The path leading from Route 101 to the top of Jerimoth Hill runs through private land, but is open to the public five days a year, between 8 a.m.

No, if you want a true climbing adventure, you need to head to Jerimoth Hill in Rhode Island, the pride of the Foster township near the Connecticut border.
With an elevation topping off at 812 feet, Jerimoth may seem like, well, a walk in the park, but if you try to tackle it, you'll discover that while endurance may not be an issue, ingenuity certainly is.
In fact, Rhode Islanders will tell you, tongue in cheek, that the Johnston landfill beats out any hill in the state when it comes to height, and while I don't get a glimpse of this man-made pile as I motor into Johnston, the air is pungent, reeking of refuse.

The Highpointers Club has worked out these open access dates with the property owner whose land sits on the most obvious access from the road to the true highpoint (which is actually owned by Brown University).
A few pictures and we walked back, meeting more highpointers along the way (there were some 103 people who came to see Jerimoth Hill on this day).
Back at the road I took some pictures of the "No Trespassing" signs warning highpointers not to access the true high point, but to be content with the sign by the road.

I'd gotten all bundled up for our big hike to Jerimoth Hill in Foster, the highest point in Rhode Island at a whopping 812 feet.
As it turned out the road that brings you to Jerimoth Hill elevates to 807 feet so that from the parking area to the highest point is only a five foot incline.
As we drove away from Jerimoth Hill feeling somewhat gypped, I couldn't help but notice the Connecticut hills looming in the distance, mocking us as if to say "Connecticut may be more boring than Rhode Island, but at least we've got real hills."

I arrived at the Burley Hill area around 11:30 and drove up to the towers that were atop a smaller sub-peak, and parked.
The drive to Snow Hill passes through a scenic drive (and walkway, judging by some benches) through mountain laurel, which was in bloom and made for a very pretty, flowery drive.
This little band of hills are located in the Meshomasic State Forest near East Hampton, south of Hartford.

The men parked their car on the side of the road, and in the middle of the night, decided to bushwhack the 50-foot distance to Jerimoth.
When they got back to their car, two men emerged from the bushes, fired shotgun blasts into the air, and made the Alaskans wait face-down at gun-point until the cops showed up.

This was the first leg of a two highpoint trip to RI and MA.

He has "hosted" the access days on Jerimoth Hill for years.
As for my experience on Jerimoth Hill, it was #8 (of 31 so far) for me and I completed it on October 7, 2001 (Columbus Day).

Jerimoth Hill (812 ft.) in Rhode Island is among the lowest high points but one the most difficult to achieve, courtesy of a landowner who confronts trespassers on his property with threats of violence (he has been known to occasionally lay waste to bewildered hikers’ cameras).
The Highpoints Club has recently worked with the landowners to set up access days where aspiring highpointers can visit Jerimoth Hill without having to wear camouflage and sneak in under the dark of the new moon.
