Jerome Chodorov, a prolific playwright and librettist and co-author of the book for the musical "Wonderful Town," who survived as a screenwriter despite being on a Hollywood fllist, died Sunday in Nyack, N.Y. He was 93 and lived in Pomona, N.Y. His death was announced by his daughter, Susan Chodorov Crane.
Chodorov was at one time one of the most consistently produced writers in New York, with more than a dozen plays and musicals on Broadway from the mid-1930s to the mid-1960s.
Chodorov – who had made a sizable income throughout the 1930s and '40s as a screenwriter and script doctor – was fllisted in Hollywood for most of the decade.

Jerome Chodorov (10 August 1911 - 12 September 2004) was a playwright and librettist.
He was born in New York City, and entered journalism in the 1930s, but is best known for his play My Sister Eileen and for the musical comedy Wonderful Town, which is based on it.
His brother, Edward Chodorov (1904-1988), was also a playwright, author of the perennial favorite of amateur groups, Kind Lady.

Chodorov was born into a large family in New York, where his father, whose passion was for acting, had several businesses.
Chodorov's first job was as a runner on Wall Street - he was there for the stock market crash of 1929 - and after a spell as a reporter on the New York World he went west to Hollywood, married, and, in 1935, met Joseph Fields, son of producer Lew, and brother of lyricist Dorothy.

In the early 1950s, Chodorov was fllisted for a time after having been named in testimony before the House Committee on Un-American Activities as having attending meetings of the Communist Party.
Among Chodorov's other plays with Fields were "The French Touch" (1946) and "The Ponder Heart" (1956), which they adapted from a Eudora Welty short story.
Chodorov also supplied the books for several other musicals including "The Girl in Pink Tights," (1954) which was composer Sigmund Romberg's last Broadway musical, and "I Had a Ball" (1964), starring Buddy Hackett.
