Jerome E. Dobson Leads University Consortium for Geographic Information Science   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Dobson was instrumental in originating the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis and establishing the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Coastal Change Analysis Program (C-CAP).
Dobson came to ORNL in 1975 after completing his doctorate in geography at the University of Tennessee.
Dobson and his wife, Gwen, reside at Eaton Crossroads in Lenoir City and have two sons, Eric, 26 and Craig, 21.

Geographer suggests Neanderthals were just Cretins
Dobson noted that the map of sites where Neanderthal remains have been found corresponds fairly closely to a pattern of cretinism common in the "goiter belts" of Central and Alpine Europe until well into the 20th century, when iodized salt was introduced.
Anthropologists have greeted Dobson's work with considerable skepticism, noting that some Neanderthal remains have been found near the ocean, that key skeletal traits common in cretins are not found in Neanderthals, and that a single pathology cannot explain the extinction of an entire population that had survived in a hostile environment for thousands of years.
Dobson's article, published in December, argues that Neanderthals were a species of modern humans who suffered from cretinism because they lived deep inland, where glacial meltwater leached the soil of iodine and other highly soluble minerals.

Dobson's conclusions, they contend, are a stretch based on highly circumstantial evidence and at odds with evolutionary biology.
In both the skeletal examinations and the medical literature, Dr. Dobson was struck by the conspicuous similarities in the overall body proportions, skulls and individual bones of Neanderthals and cretins.
Dobson argued that in genetic terms, Neanderthals may have been anatomically modern humans who were pathologically altered by the effects of iodine deficiency.

KU researcher warns against potential threat of 'geoslavery'
Since 1975, Dobson has used GIS for a number of applications -- from conducting environmental analyses to identifying populations at risk of terrorism and natural disasters -- by combining data sets such as detailed population counts of every country in the world, terrain and nighttime lights interpreted from satellite images, road networks and elevations.
Dobson outlined the dangers of geoslavery in an article that appears in the most recent issue of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' Technology and Society magazine.
To prevent this, Dobson's paper outlines a number of actions that should be taken, including revising national and international laws on incarceration, slavery, stalking and branding, and developing encryption systems that prevent criminals or countries with bad human rights records from accessing GPS signals.

The charge (ignited by Bridget Dobson’s desire to fire SB’s head writer, Anne Howard Bailey, who was appointed in 1986), is that the husband-and-wife team breached their contract and jeopardized the success of the serial when they "disrupted and confused" members of the show’s production staff and sought to discredit Bailey.
The Dobsons (Jerry, at this point, had left the show but Bridget continued on as executive producer) insisted that they had the contractual right to hire and fire.
Dobson, it would appear, is never without her sense of humor — it seems to have been her salvation through the last trying months.

 GEOG 488
The required reading article by Jerome E. Dobson piqued my interest in this subject and gave rise to concern for the future state of our society, pondering what degree of control will be implemented and / or tolerated.
It seems that the general population is largely unaware of the speed at which geospatial data is being collected, the technology is developing and, how the owners of this technology intend to use it.
Although Dobson’s effort to foster social debate of this issue is a noble one, the debate seems to be largely contained within academia and the (potential) consequence of ‘complete implementation’ of geospatial technologies has yet to rise to the consciousness of society at large.

Dobson discusses geographical fieldwork and the remarkable improvements that GIS, GPS and field-station technologies have brought.
Through technology, exploration can now be extended to places where humans cannot go, to phenomena that cannot be observed directly by human senses, and to macroscopic processes so large they can be observed only through remote sensing, GIS, and three-dimensional geovisualization.
