Tenor saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi is an internationally recognized jazz performer, composer, author, and educator.

A native of Boston, Jerry began playing the clarinet and alto saxophone at an early age and soon switched to tenor.
Bergonzi emerged as a major force on the national jazz scene in 1973 when he joined the Dave Brubeck Ensemble.
Recently, Bergonzi led a trio at the closing concert of the International Association of Jazz Educators where he was voted the most requested performer by the governing body.

Bergonzi's earliest inspiration was his uncle, a trombonist-guitarist-bassist-arranger named Sparky Thomasetti who played in swing bands around Beantown, and lived in an apartment upstairs from the youngster.
Bergonzi dedicates the lovely ballad "Committed" to his wife, Jeri, "a beautiful, talented piano player." As for the tune, "It's an AABA form, but all the A's are slightly different, so you run into different twists."
Bergonzi says: "Playing trio, tenor-bass-drums, you have an open feeling; there are no chords in your way, and you can play substitutions that you might not hear if the piano played a certain voicing.

The music, underpinned by a wealth of Afro-Latin rhythms, is delivered by a splendid cast which includes Michelin, tenor saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi, bassist Fernando Huergo, drummer Steve Langone-all holdovers from Art-along with percussionist Da Silva and singers Alex Alvear, Sharine Ganse, Chiara Civello, Viscardi and Viqueira.
A dialog ensues between the rhythm section and soloist Bergonzi, “though some phrases we play together.” Langone steps in with a few remarks as well, then all quiets down for an introspective Nando interlude which precedes the rollicking “Obaluaie,” written in a rhythm called apanije.
At one point, Jerry had this amazing dialog between the upper and lower registers of his saxophone.
