Jerry Bails and Roy Thomas, the pioneering editors of Alter-ego, sat next to each other, flanked by their lovely wives.
Jerry's encyclopedic knowledge of obscure Golden Age artists, and Roy's "inside" stories of his years in pro comics thrilled everyone within earshot, and the easy rapport between these longtime friends was fun to watch.
The presence of Jerry Ordway -- who had contributed to several of Bill Black's early-'70s, as well as producing his own zine called Okay Comics -- meant that the afternoon was made for my cousin/pal Jon Park.

Ordway isn't entirely out of the book, but almost every scene is tainted in some way.
This is a nauseating defilement of Power Girl when contrasted by her appearance in the last issue of JSA where Jerry Ordway honored the earth-two character through an illustration of she as a classic beauty posed in a natural setting.

For most of the regular series Jerry merely scripted the comic, leaving the art chores to Mike Manley and others, except for the beautiful covers he painted for each and every issue.
It's simply that, since Jerry had drawn that wonderful cover to A/E V3#1, I reasoned that I should wait a while before asking if he had anything we could use for a cover or interiors of our first issue spotlighting the Big Red Cheese and company.
Although Jerry said he'd have to "dig around to find some good stuff," it was only a week or two later that I was surprised and pleased to receive the following Power of Shazam!-related artwork, all of it both penciled and inked by Jerry.

Jerry Ordway's interpretation of The World's Mightiest Mortal is perhaps DC's best, preserving (for the most part) the classic flavor of the old Fawcett stories while grounding "Cap" firmly in contemporary America.
Ordway's artwork is stylized and appealing, and if his script doesn't qualify as great literature, it at least deserves credit for some clever touches.
One of the best is Ordway's depiction of Fawcett City, almost a giant movie set from film noir and the perfect breeding ground for pulp adventure.

Ordway is no John Byrne, and the difference is huge.

Ordway's art is sharp and fun, but the new villain designs are rather uninspired.
I've been a fan of Jerry Ordway's work ever since I first saw it on early issues of Roy Thomas's All-Star Squadron in the early 1980s.
The one aspect of this book that did click for me, aside from most of Ordway's efforts, was the naming of the new characters.

To be honest, I expected this book to be weaker in art, as Jerry Ordway was competing with John Cassaday, but it wasn't the artwork that let me down...
Bruce Wayne's confrontation with Elijah Snow was the most life that any of the characters showed in the whole story, and Jerry Ordway does a fantastic job of carrying out the confidence and skill that Bruce Wayne has brought to bear.
In fact, Jerry Ordway is really the saving grace of this book, as his work has not looked this good in years.
