Ross graduated from the USAF Test Pilot School’s Flight Test Engineer Course in 1976 and was subsequently assigned to the 6510th Test Wing at Edwards Air Force Base, California.
Ross was selected as an astronaut in May 1980.
Ross performed two space walks totaling 10 hours and 49 minutes to manually deploy the stuck Gamma Ray Observatory antenna and to test prototype Space Station EVA hardware.

Jerry Ross (March 9, 1926 - November 11, 1955) was an American lyricist and composer whose works for the musical theater include Damn Yankees and The Pajama Game, both of which achieved major success during the Golden Age of Broadway.
Ross began his career in the Broadway Theater with “John Murray Anderson’s Almanac,” a revue for which he and Adler wrote most of the songs (resulting in recordings of “Acorn in the Meadow” by Harry Belafonte and “Fini” by Polly Bergen).
Jerry Ross was admitted posthumously to the Songwriters' Hall of Fame in 1982.

WINFIELD -- Jerry Ross received a hometown hero's welcome from more than 500 students, parents, staff, friends and family Sunday as Crown Point's newest elementary school was named in his honor.
Ross donated a section of the truss he used on his first two space walks to the school and had students tie the American flag onto it before it was hung in the media center.
Ross also gave the school the space suit and flight boots he wore on his first shuttle mission in 1985.
