New Jersey is bordered on the north and northeast by New York, on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, on the south by Delaware, and on the west by Pennsylvania.
New Jersey is a politically competitive state; the Governorship alternated between the parties from the election of Richard J. Hughes in 1961 until Democrat Jon Corzine was elected to replace a Democrat in 2005; the legislature has also switched hands, and one house was evenly divided from 1999–2001.
New Jersey is also home to several other urban legends, such as the ghost of Annie's Road in Totowa, Midgetville in Edgewater, Albino Village in Clifton, the supposed KKK hotbed Whipporwill Valley Road in Middletown, the haunted and demon-possessed Clinton Road in West Milford, and the Witch of Igoe Road in Marlboro.

One of the most renowned portrait painters of the day, a Jerseyman Sir John Millais, painted her and when the portrait, "A Jersey Lily", was first exhibited at The Royal Academy Lillie was already so famous that the picture had to be roped off to protect it from the crowds who flocked to view.
Sir Walter Raleigh, who was governor of Jersey between 1600 and 1603, named it Elizabeth Castle, after his Queen, Elizabeth I. At first the fact that the castle was enclosed by the rising tide for seven out of every twelve hours was seen as an advantage.
Elizabeth Castle was sold to the Jersey government in 1923 and apart from the period of German occupation during the Second World War its only use has been as a historical monument and more recently as a venue for civic marriages.
