McHenry County originally stretched all the way east to Lake Michigan, with the county seat centrally located in McHenry, but in 1839, the eastern townships of the county were carved out to form Lake County.

In January 1998, the Jersey County Genealogical Society, which was formed in 1991, disbanded and trasferred their assets and memberships to the Jersey County Historical Society.

In 1992, Illinois EPA determined that Lake DePue had been impacted by metals, siltation, and suspended solids, caused mainly by industry and agriculture (Illinois EPA, 1994).
The Illinois Water Quality Report published in September 1996 determined that elevated levels of zinc in river and stream sediments impacted more waterway miles in Illinois than any other parameter monitored (Illinois EPA, 1996).

The recorded history of Essex County begins in 1666, when 30 Connecticut families headed by Robert Treat arrived to establish a settlement along the banks of the Passaic River in what is now the City of Newark.
Essex County was officially established in 1682 by the East Jersey Legislature as one of the four original counties of present day New Jersey (Bergen, Monmouth and Middlesex were the others.) By the time of the American Revolution, Essex County had become quite prosperous.
