Jersey Girl (2004) Movie Review - The Hollywood News
Jersey Girl has been a rough ride for Kevin Smith, and you have to feel bad for anyone who's had to take a labor of love and dismantle it in the name of commerce.
Even the opening scene in Jersey Girl in which school children read prepared speeches about their parents, appeared to be a nod to Kindergarten Cop (a likable, underrated 90's gem), a movie that I constantly recite lines from with my friends.
Jersey Girl is certainly far less irreverent than his past works and it has moments of sincerity no doubt triggered by real life events (his father recently passed away), but as I watched this movie, I couldn't help but wish I’d been able to see the film that Smith wanted us all to see.

Jersey Girl may have come from his soul, but it contradicts the charm of a Kevin Smith movie.
The nadir of the movie -- or cheesy zenith -- is Ollie's sodden soliloquy, delivered in the presence of his baby, in which he laments the loss of her mother and his wife.

Jersey Girl proves, even with six features now under his belt, just how amateurish a filmmaker Kevin Smith still is and continues Ben Affleck's rapid descent from movie stardom.
Jersey Girl is Smith's blatantly obvious attempt to slide into mainstream territory, completely devoid of his—or any—personality.
The movie lacks any sense of pace, and the use of dissolves in the scene where Ollie reacts to the news of his wife's death makes the moment border on self-parody.

dOc DVD Review: Jersey Girl (2004)
Many theories surround the box-office failure of Kevin Smith's Jersey Girl: the overexposure of the Ben Affleck/Jennifer Lopez romance, the failure of the Bennifer vehicle Gigli, the fact that it was a change of pace for the director, who specializes in talky, self-described "d*ck and fart joke" comedies.
Audio Transfer Review: Like most comedies, Jersey Girl is fairly "center mixed." Most of the audio comes from the center channel, with music and ambient sounds mixed to the front mains and presented with decent directionality and stereo separation.
Jersey Girl was Kevin Smith's first attempt at mainstream filmmaking, and it succeeds more than the box office returns would have you believe.

And the movie's essential conflict at the end is between a father's ambition to be something other than a garbageman and loving the quirky life that he and his daughter already have, so the conclusion is far from surprising.

Jersey Girl sees a new, more mature Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy), both as a writer and director, but as he makes the transition from funny to serious filmmaker, there appears to be some growing pains involved in his journey into unknown territories.
What is left is a freshness in his characterizations and observations, and in the end, Jersey Girl does manage to succeed on its own terms as a heartwarming parallel tale of man coming to terms with maturity on his own.
