  Jerzy Andrzejewski (1909-1983)
Born and raised in Warsaw, Andrzejewski studied Polish language and literature from 1927 to 1931 at the University of Warsaw.
In The Gates of Paradise Andrzejewski presents a highly lyrical rendering of the Children's Crusade of 1212, when thousands of children were led to death and slavery for the realization of the Christian conviction that purity brings victory.
Andrzejewski's reaction was to publish in the émigré press (The Appeal, Paris, 1968), and reduce his participation in regime-sponsored events to a minimum.

Andrzejewski made a name for himself as a writer in the 1930s, winning a prestigious literary prize with his first published novel Harmony of the Heart (1938).
Andrzejewski was one of the first to express his overt commitment to the new régime by offering self-criticism of his past literary and political "immaturity", before he joined the Party in April 1950.
Andrzejewski's own subsequent actions appear rather bizarre, in that he stipulated to the Instytut Literacki that it adopt the cuts imposed by the Polish censors, which it refused to do.

Jerzy Andrzejewski's Ashes and Diamonds is a complete rip-off if you are in it for the diamonds.
I believe Andrzejewski's greatest success in Ashes and Diamonds is his ability to make me question myself, even though the novel is set in a foreign land and in a time period I will never live in.
Perhaps through predominately using dialogue and not action, Andrzejewski was attempting to offer a glimpse into the minds of the characters.

 Jerzy Skolimowski
Jerzy Skolimowski has said that he makes films to please himself.
In his early twenties Skolimowski was already a credentialled writer with several published books of poems, short stories and a play to his credit.
Skolimowski's early apprehension about such a move evident in his substitution of Yurek (“little Jerzy” in Polish) for Jerzy in the credits, turned to disillusion (“the worst fourteen months of my life”) when the film received a sparse European release and failed at the box office.
