Director Jerzy Hoffman gained his place in history of Polish cinematography through adaptations of the popular Trilogy of epic prose by Nobel Prize winner Henryk Sienkiewicz.
Hoffman's fascination with Sienkiewicz goes back to his time as a child in Siberia, to where his family was displaced from Stryj (Poland) during World War II.
By chance Hoffman received books in reverse order and this was also the order in which he made his adaptations.

"With Fire and Sword" depicts Kozak war against Poland (05/23/99)
Hoffman's supposedly "faithful reading" of the text is in fact a peculiar interpretation by the director who seems hopelessly divided between his love for the Ukrainophobic Sienkiewicz on the one hand, and his fascination with, and personal connection to, Ukraine on the other.
Hoffman met Stupka during commemorative events in 1991 of the Babyn Yar massacre in Kyiv and several years afterwards telephoned him from Warsaw and offered him the role of the Kozak hetman.
Hoffman's original intention, "With Fire and Sword" has become the most recent example of Polish-Ukrainian cooperation that promises to benefit Ukrainian cinema simultaneously in a number of aspects - on the level of deeply rooted psychological stereotypes, for example.

CER | Film: Jerzy Hoffman and Ogniem i mieczem
Hoffman is not content with just having reversed a decade-long trend that has favoured American films in his homeland.
Not that the filming was simple, Hoffman was caught harassed by the authorities as part of the 1968 wave of organised anti-Semitism and the film's shooting had to be interrupted due to the Soviet-led invasion of Czecboslovakia.
Hoffman admits with remarkable cheerfulness that next year he is going to be 70 and, therefore, he can't afford to work any more on projects that take a decade to prepare.

Potop (The Deluge) - A film by Jerzy Hoffman
Based on the most spectacular part of Siekiewicz's Trilogy, The Deluge was adapted to the screen by Jerzy Hoffman in the spirit of traditional interpretation of the work to "brace the heart," stressing the internal transformation of the chief protagonist, Andrzej Kmicica, from adventurer and chieftain to an exemplar of courage and patriotism.
The screenplay was worked on by Jerzy Homman, Adam Kersten and Wojciech Zurkowski and whole platoons of scholars were consulted regarding the historical scenes.
Large parts of the film were shot in the Soviet Union, in the environs of Minsk they built Wodokty, Wolmontowicza and Lubicz, and many of the battle scenes were filmed near Kiev, in the basin of the Dniepr River.

Released in 1983, Austeria (The Inn) is one of the most cherished projects of filmmaker Jerzy Kawalerowicz, who based the film on his own memories of growing up in a Ukrainian town with a profoundly mixed population, a town that was obliterated by the ravages of the 20th century.
Like his colleagues Krzysztof Zanussi and Andrzej Wajda, Kawalerowicz is both a well-established director in his own right and the long-time artistic director of a film production unit, in his case Kadr Films, established in 1955.

Central Europe Review - Kinoeye: The Empire Strikes Back
Jerzy Hoffman's Ogniem i mieczem (By Fire and Sword, 1999) and Nikita Mikhalkov's Sibirskij tsirjulnik (The Barber of Siberia, 1998) are two films made in direct opposition to American cinema, and yet they still retain some curious similarities in their underlying concept.
Hoffman's name has been intimately connected with that of Sienkiewicz, ever since he made Pan Wolodyjowski (Mr Wolodyjowski, 1967-69) and Potop (Deluge, 1974) - adaptations of the third and second parts of the trilogy of which Ogniem i mieczem forms the first book.
These two films, made during the Communist era when national pride was at a low point, won Polish hearts with depictions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, considered by Poles to be the golden era of their history.

In 1999 Hoffman brought the first part of the Sienkewicz trilogy to screen in the form of "Ogniem i Mieczem" ("With Fire And Sword"), but left the editing to a young editor who tried to impress young audiences with pointless fast edits, which made that film nearly unbearable to watch.
