Ossolinski, whose policy it was to win the Cossacks for the Crown, at once sent peace commissioners to the Ukraine; while the Szlachta, who knew and feared the Chancellor's royalist proclivities, determined to crush the Cossacks before they could come to terms with the Government, and so thwart Ossolinski's plans at the forthcoming Election Diet.
Thus, in spite of all the efforts of the King and Ossolinski, the Cossack question, which, with the exercise of a little tact and equity, might have been adjusted temporarily, continued to be as menacing as before.

He commanded the defense of Lwow (Lviv), took part in the relief of Zbaraz and fought at Zborow and Pilawce.
His ambition prevailed however, when in 1650, as a result of a conflict with Chancellor Jerzy Ossolinski who was then promoted to be generalissimo, he resigned from all his posts and retired.
He died in 1656 near Gdansk and his remains were supposedly brought to Leszno and buried at the Aryan church.

This painting depicts the procession of a diplomatic mission to the Pope in Rome, led by Jerzy Ossolinski in 1633.
Polish diplomatic missions were well known throughout Europe for their theatricality and extravagance, and on this one Ossolinski brought 300 richly dressed and bejewelled noblemen.
The horses were shod with golden horseshoes attached by a single nail so that they would fall off as souvenirs for the spectators.
