  Bio for Jerzy Semkow
Jerzy Semkow has gained an international reputation through his appearances with the world's leading orchestras and opera companies.
Maestro Semkow has conducted the Berlin Philharmonic, the Orchestre National de France, the Orchestre de Paris, and the National Orchestra of Belgium, as well as the principal orchestras of London, Vienna, Stockholm, Madrid, Frankfurt, Monte Carlo, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Milan, Rome, Florence and Jerusalem, among other music centers.
Maestro Semkow's activities in the 1998-99 season included season-opening concerts with the NDR Radio-Philharmonie in Hannover, Germany; performances with the Ensemble Orchestral liug$axis, a new production of "Boris Godunov" with the Rome Opera, and multiple concerts with the Orchestre National de France and the Orchestre National de Lyon.

Jerzy Semkow [+] is one of the more successful conductors specializing in late 19th century Russian repertory.
In 1959, Semkow became the artistic director and principal conductor of the Warsaw National Opera, a post he held until 1962.
Semkow has recorded for several different labels since the early 1970s, and the list of works he has conducted includes concertos by Nielsen and Chopin, and Scriabin's Symphony No. 2.

Semkow was obsessive in his preparation, strict and exacting in rehearsal, polished in performance, and even instigated post concert reviews with the musicians of their performance.
Jerzy Semkow's Music Directorship saw the addition of a new summer pops series at Queeny Park in west St. Louis county and the appointment of Thomas Peck as Chorus Director and founding of the Saint Louis Symphony Chorus.
Ultimately, Jerzy Semkow was never comfortable with the role of Music Director of a major American orchestra and felt more at home in Europe.
