Birdsall's best friend is a gay movie makeup artist involved in an unhappy relationship with a gadabout hunk.
(Birdsall meeting her mother and stepfather, the latter dryly played by John Gielgud, is the film's most hilarious scene).
The only major drawbacks are a voice-over narration by Birdsall that tends to point out obvious jokes in unsubtle ways, and an unnecessary nude sex scene with Lynn Redgrave, which accounts for the R rating (there is also some brief nudity of Carter and a couple of scattered vulgarities).

Another notable television role was his portrayal of slick playboy Marcus Tandy in the infamous BBC1 soap opera Eldorado, which ran for just one year from 1992-93 and gained a reputation as one of the biggest television flops of all time.
Nonetheless, the amount of coverage the programme received for its perceived low quality and lack of success would gain Birdsall much exposure, and from 1995 to 1999 he played one of the lead characters in another BBC1 programme, the successful futuristic action/adventure series Bugs.

Eldorado (TV series) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Britain, Eldorado is remembered as an embarrassing failure for the BBC, and is sometimes used as a byword for any unsuccessful, poorly-received or over-hyped television programme.
The series ended with one of its star characters, Marcus Tandy (played by Jesse Birdsall), escaping an attempt on his life withhis car being blown up, and sailing off into the distance on a boat, with his girlfriend Pilar Moreno (played by Sandra Sandri).
Some viewers noticed that the car that was blown up was not, in fact, the Renault Alpine driven by Marcus, but a thinly disguised, much older model, the Triumph TR7.
