This album's musical arrangements were based on the touring band Crowell took to Europe last year, and he wrote many of its tunes during that period, as an American overseas, watching the 2004 presidential elections from a more global point of view.
Crowell is well aware that casual listeners might mistake the song's sentiments about Valium, the Playboy Channel, killer weed, supermodels and bleeding hearts as belonging to him rather than his character.

The songs revolve around the rather rough neighborhood where Crowell grew up and the legacy it left upon the people he knew.
Rodney Crowell may well be the most talented country artist of his generation: a singer-songwriter-producer-entertainer who has constantly forged ahead into new musical and thematic territory during times when too many of his compatriots have timidly clung to the straight and narrow.
The thing that has always set Crowell apart and given him his added creative edge is his brilliant imagination and incessant creative exploration.
