  The Setup
Saxophonist Jesse Davis was a featured player in Robert Altman's Kansas City and on this date he seems to be on a mission to revitalize jazz with the energy and excitement of a “real” jazz club, as depicted in that film.
Davis' robust, soulful alto sound is most often compared to that of Cannonball Adderley, but on this date his sweet tone and fluid lines more genuinely resemble those of Charlie Parker and Sonny Stitt.
Although it's unlikely that young Davis meant for the title's initials to represent North Vietnam's guerillas, Ray Drummond's introductory “Witch Hunt”-quoting bass solo and the composer's deliberately stated melody give the song an ominous mood, evoking feelings of danger in a dark jungle.

Jesse Davis: The Setup - PopMatters Music Review
Jesse Davis might just be the hip messiah the Marsalises have longed to arrive, at least judging from the two photos included in his latest CD (which, admittedly, aren't a lot to go on, though some of his past record covers back me up on this).
Davis is able to twist that classic bop alto tradition by means of the warmth that permeates his tone; it's a highly personalized touch of style that elevates his playing beyond that of mere imitation.
Davis gives another nod to the same era with his reading of Jackie McLean's "Little Melonae" -- though Davis doesn't seem at all interested in ruffling the feathers of the upper register like McLean was back then, it's still a respectful acknowledgement of another major influence on his playing.
