Douglas was one of two winners of the first Fields Medals, awarded in 1936.

In the mid-1800's, the Belgian physicist Plateau did a series of experiments with soap films which led to the formulation of the problem that now bears his name: given a simple closed curve in space, show mathematically that there exists a surface of least area with this curve as its boundary.
Douglas received one of the first two Fields Medals in 1936 for this work.
I will also give a brief account of the life of Douglas, and of his long-running and painful battle with Tibor Radó and Richard Courant who also made important contributions to the Plateau problem, more or less at the same time as Douglas.
