Jesse Vassallo (1961- ) : World Champion Swimmer   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Jesús David “Jesse” Vassallo was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico on August 9, 1961.
Jesse was just training in the United States, because of better facilities, and that did not mean that he ceased to be a Puerto Rican preferring to swim for his country.
Jesse broke his first world record in the 400 meters Individual Medley at the trials for the 1978 World Championships to be held in Berlin, Germany, celebrated in Woodland, Texas.

 Salvador Vassallo Information
Vassallo's parents and grandparents migrated from Italy in the late 1800's and settled in the town of Yauco.
Vassallo and his brothers were born in Yauco and raised in the City of Ponce where their father, Salvador Vassallo Sr., opened a hardware store.
Vassallo's nephew, Jesse Vassallo (Victor's son) is considered to be the greatest swimmer in Puerto Rican sports history and has continued the family tradition by establishing "Vassallo Unlimited".

The Harvard Crimson :: News :: A Fast Trip to the Top
Vassallo, now residing in Miami with his mother and two younger brothers, began his swimming career with Club Deportivo de Ponce in his native Puerto Rico, where he lived until he was 11.
Vassallo's father decided to uproot his family once more and to head for California, where his sons could swim with Mission Viejo coach Mark Schubert.
In fact, Jesse is the second member of the family to receive a scholarship for his prowess in the water: Victor, who also enjoyed some success as a backstroker, received one from the University of Texas.

PUERTO RICO HERALD: Politics And Sport: Who Really Are Puerto Rico's 50 Greatest Athletes?
Vassallo, who made the U.S. Olympic team in 1980 but did not compete due to the U.S. boycott, competed for the United States at the 1979 Pan Am Games in San Juan, winning gold and silver and setting one of his three world records.
But the exclusion of Vassallo, Fernandez and Torres was essentially what tipped off the mother of all political arguments this week here.
My point here is that given Puerto Rico's political status, Jesse Vassallo and Gigi Fernandez brought just as much glory to Puerto Rico (if not more) by competing for the United States.
