Jessica Rydill:  Children of the Shaman
Jessica Rydill's debut novel, Children of the Shaman is set in a world very much like our own, with magic and different nomenclature.
Rydill attempts to tell several different types of story in Children of the Shaman, with the result that the novel does not seem as cohesive as one would like.
However, the early chapters allow Rydill to present her world, at once familiar and exotic, at a leisurely pace to let the reader become acclimatized to the differences between our world and Annat's.

Jessica Rydill's first novel, Children of the Shaman, is set in what seems to be a post-Ice Age far future.
Jessica Rydill has a truly distinctive new voice, unlike any fantasy I have read over the last few years.
Miss Rydill's sense of the society and people she had created to fill her world is so defined that the world becomes wholly believable - a leap of faith which many fantasy authors cannot quite achieve.

The SF Site Featured Review: Children of the Shaman
Rydill has clearly spent a considerable amount of time creating her world-that-isn't quite ours, and she just as clearly is cognizant of much more information than she is allowing the reader to share.
Like a railroad, Rydill's story passes through a seeming unending panoply of exotic towns, beginning as a story of two children being reunited with their estranged father before moving on to a murder mystery, a coming-of-age story, a fantastic quest among others.
Rydill's protagonist is Annat, a Wanderer adolescent whose ailing aunt has dropped her and her brother, Malchik, off with their long-missing father, Yuda.

Jessica Rydill: Children of the Shaman - an infinity plus review
Shamans, in Rydill's world, aren't toothless old men mumbling over broken sheep bones while they go on spirit journeys, they're firebolt-weilding warriors, who communicate telepathically and perform acts of healing based on an instinctive understanding of cellular biology about seventy to eighty years in advance of their mid-nineteenth century milieu.
The profligacy with which Rydill assigns Yuda roles is characteristic of her storytelling style.
Annat is simply too good, too lacking in hard edge or dissatisfaction with her bewildering parent, to truly satisfy as a protagonist, while Yuda's interesting ambiguity fairly swiftly fades away into positive heroism under the pressure of events.

Rydill again holds up her cracked mirror to our world...
I reviewed Jessica Rydill's debut novel, 'Children of the Shaman', for DiverseBooks last year, and a very impressive debut it was too.
And parts of this work are not literal, in any case, but taking place in (for instance) another parallel world where shamans go to hang out when their earthly parts are not open to callers.

Jessica rapidly paints a vivid picture of her world, the peoples and religion.
As the novel progresses the main group meet a number of unusual people, who, in keeping with the rest of the novel, are written so gracefully thay manage to be strange without being jarring to the reader.
Overall it is difficult to believe this is Jessica Rydill's first book.

Clearly Rydill understands that interesting people have to be at the heart of a good story.
Unlike many fantasy authors, Rydill actually has researched and understood the societies on which her world is modeled.
Finally, I should note that although there are only a few violent scenes here, Rydill does not flinch from intense descriptions, and she has graphic portraits of fight scenes and injuries.

The journey to rescue him is fraught with danger; things are seldom as they seem and the shamans are constantly battling evil on physical and mental levels, forcing Annat to leave her childhood behind as she rapidly masters her own shamanistic abilities.
Jessica Rydill has chosen not to follow the traditional fantasy format for her debut, although Children of the Shaman is undoubted fantasy.
There are some astonishing twists and turns in the plot, and it is an enjoyable and refreshingly different read.

Orbit publish first time author, Ian Graham's Monument (Orbit, £10.00) in hardback, a genre fantasy in the vein of David Gemmell, which deserves to do well.
One of my favourite (yet grossly under read) new authors is Jessica Rydill, whose Children of the Shaman (Orbit £7.99) was a fantastic debut which combined strong characters, a nineteenth century Middle European feel and a great cover, has her second novel, The Glass Mountain (Orbit, £6.99), which continues the adventures of Annat and Malchik.
This is one for all those folks interested in really strong (though not obviously commercial) fantasy writing.
